Sorry to mention the D word here but has anyone here used vegetable oil in their diesel tow car? I was thinking about trying it in the herriotmobile and making a profit on my 11p per mile.

I think paul (thinforth) has (in his landrover). He's on a ship somewhere, but is due home next week

Si I is considering it in his Audi.... seemed to go ok on 5th gear in that old merc. Afraid nothing but the finest shell for me in my golf though!

I heard it's ok for the older roughy toughy proper diesels but not so good in the long run for the newer cars.

A farmer friend of mine went out and bought the kit for refining used vegetable oil . (He has a restaurant as well ....so has continuity of supply)

He runs three vehicles on this concoction

98 Nissan Pick Up - No Problem
2005 Discovery - No Problems....but he thinks it is abit sluggish

2004 Toyota Land Cruiser - New Diesel Pump required £1400 plus fitting after two fills of the brew........

I would use Red myself................

Ding. I've heard something like the Isuzu 1.5/1.7TD engines fitted to Vauxhalls in the mid 90s, or a Pug 106 1.5D etc.

Don't you just mix it 50/50 with kerosene ? old roughy toughy diesels can run on just about anything even flour.

I’m thinking of chopping in my Discovery for a 90 300 TDI and was hoping that I could run that on Veg oil. I’ve heard that it is worth putting in a bit of the real thing as well but have no personal experience.

When I was in Costco the other day I did notice that the budget veg oil was 40p a litre so a good saving. It comes in 25L cans so nice and easy to deal with too.

Will need to ask Thinforth when he gets back from his travels.

I took Thinfourth to recover his shed which was out of fuel in the car park of Cafe Soc. (in amongst the Porsches). Quick stop at Asda for fuel...the supermarket not the fillling station.

I was in the Exige so the fringe benefit was it didn't stink my car up.

Nice smell of chippy when he got the Landy fired up.

think it needs kerosene mixed to stop it freezing in winter.

high pressure diesel injectors can sometimes cause it a problem I think which would tie in with it knackering a fuel pump as mentioned above.

Stricktly speaking, you're still supposed to pay fuel duty on top of the actual oil cost I think. I'm sure I read that you should pay 28ppl or something in duty. Chances of being rumbled are probably insanly low, but then it may be difficult explaining why you are leaving the local cash & carry with 20 huge cans of veg oil

You're allowed upto a given level before you have to pay duty.

can't remember the level though.

And how would they ever know how much you have used.

They could question friends and neighbours to see if you've recently started business as a burger & chips vendor, or to see if you've gained 6 stone since you decided to use the oil twice by cooking lots of chips?

Diesel is looking like a good bet for a cheap winter runner now mind!
