FtLOG.... So, do I have to create a poll then? I got the impression that most wanted to stay as was & I don't really have the time at the mo.

IMHO...leave it the way it is. This has been a gentle reminder to people to watch what they post publicly. There are plenty of other ways to comunicate privately :thumbsup

This will turn cyclical if we're not careful; most points have now been raised several times. I think the important point to raise is that whilst locking the forum up would hide from search engines, there would be no more security in issues where it actually matters. AFAIK, the only way to hide content from search engines would be to make it all member-only.

Looks like a poll is still the only way to get an answer then...

Don't agree Shug.

If you did a poll as to whether we should have a poll, I think the answer would be no. A lot of agreement that it will not work if you impose security and could do more harm than good.

Lets save you the time, think of what we are posting, and read our posts before we press submit. I don't think that any of us mind if a Mod steps in and deletes one if we have made an error or missed implications. It can simply be sent again modified or with omission.

This thread has made us think of what we post content, so it has already served a purpose.

ps Robin, although I agree that it probably does not matter how many members we have, with over 1,000 names there, the majority of whom have never posted, I feel that it is not a true reflection of our S_E community.

Why don't you have a poll weather we should have a poll or not

Leave it as it is.

I think Paul raised a subtle point - it's not just about leaching journos and self-incriminating tales of crazy driving antics - it's also just about a desire to have a private chat with pals - to talk about things that robbers might cherish or even just to have everything you say raked over by people who are out to cause trouble (as in Vic's case).

I think these are both real world problems.

Unfortunately, as I said earlier in this thread, I don't believe it's possible to provide any real privacy and all I can recommend is that people treat the forum as 100% public.

Cheers,
Robin
True. I think you may also be saying that even with a member-only format, we cannot be properly certain that it is then "safe" to talk of anything on-forum that "robbers may cherish"...cos we have no way of knowing the full ethics even of all signed-up members ;-) But it all comes down to levels of trust doesn't it.

Out of interest, was anyone in SE1 aware of feeling more secure there than here on SE2? Other than its homepage, the SE1 yahoo group was (is) not open to search engines or general browsing. The advantage was that the existence of the club could be found by those interested, but content not perused without taking the trouble to sign up. Perhaps an SE1 resurrection is looming by natural forces

Oh God am I going all circular again, sorry folks

I know why don't we have a secret forum that is so secret that no one knows where it is

And to keep this forum extra secure we won't actually post anything in it.

That will fox them.

Or we could fit an auto destruct button that in the event of anything bad happening the whole forum vanishes at the touch of a button. Just the idea of ED and a big red button does worry me more then a daily record journalist
