The 111S was supplied with a longer ratio 'box from Rover, they weren't allowed to modify it in any way and it is not a c/r 'box.
If you're looking at S2s, consider a 135R but only if you're planning on tracking it a lot. If you're going for mostly road use then I'd go for a 111S as it's a slightly softer ride than the 135R.

IIRC, Lotus developed a tweaked version of the S2 gearbox to give the 111S close ratios all the way up to 4th, then a longer 5th for more pleasant cruising.
