Get her an MX5 instead - safer way to teach her rwd - not silly fast - maybe a Mk1 1600cc.. sweet engine - cheap to repair. :idea: then she can trade up once she's had a few scary wet moments... ooh er.. :twisted:

Another vote for the MX-5. Girlfriend has one (1600 Mk2) cheaper and easier to live with for her. Dead simple roof, 1/2 a boot (as opposed to 1/8 ) mostly waterproof and still good fun to drive.

I have had my Liz now for 7 months, I have loved (Almost! :oops: ) every minute but I have had a couple of lucky escapes and really scary moments I wouldn't have had in a 'normal' car that a learner just doesn't need and I drive like a wuss.

Best bet is find someone to take you both out for some pax time and see what you make of it.

East Fortune or Knockhill for some tracktime perhaps? Check the trackdays and meets sections for SE gatherings.

But an Elise would be a fantastic car to have once she has passed her test and got some driving time.

I'm with Gordon on this one - I've never seen a response rate like this since Louise started a thread like, "OMFG I found a doorhandle today!" on SELC*CK

As for elise as a lerner car the Insurance will cripple you. I'd much rather have my daughter in a nice solid german box like volkswagen until she's older - other people have a tendancy not to see elises overtaking or at junctions. They have no airbags either, which you may or may not know and as like ppl have said, no power steering, no servos on the brakes.

I don't see that as being a problem. My first car didn't have power steering and once you're used to the brakes they're fine. Since she'd be learning in it she wouldn't know what servo brakes were like.

Steady folks - certainly not me having a laugh :lol: I've been working the past couple of days and a question like this pops up... :roll:

Okay - I'll put my serious hat on. The idea of an MX5 is a very very good one. The Elise is an honest little car and there's no real world reason that it's any different to drive than any other car - apart from the handling and weight distrubution. When it spits out out, it tends to do it quickly and with little warning (unless you've done it a million times on track before)

Ordinary FWD hatch will just slide wide at the front pretty much 100% of the time if you do something silly (which we've all done in the first year or two)

But if you do want her to learn in correct-wheel-drive, the MX5 is an honest handler with low enough limits that you ain't going to be screaming into the scenery at scary pace if it all goes south - they're cheap and reliable too.

Anyway, with that out of the road.... Glasgow, eh? 8)
