FWIW, I'm with Ross as well - just don't like it.

Combination of layout, ads, etc, etc. Familiarisation may make it better, but there's some stuff it just obfuscates unnecessarily IMO. Use it when required, but not my first choice.

I hate iOS mail too lol, it's just personal preference I pretty much used both SE and SELOC exclusively on my phone. The page renders just fine for me (I can deal with tiny fonts tho) and I like the way phpbb lays out the topics. Years of forum use on phpbb habits die hard.

There is definitely a gap appearing between forums and social type solutions, social, as mentioned does not capture knowledge in a way that has the context like a forum does. Social is superficial. If there is a tool that integrates forum like knowledge capture and search ability with a type of interface like twatter/facebork this could be a good option to transition to I've yet to find one tho. But I've not really been looking.

Still have one for the occasional forum notifs. But Tapatalk does a fair job of that now so rarely look at it...

That for me is one of the biggest benefits, instant notification of replies to subscribed posts.
