Still getting 20mb most of the time, so use Sky at 0.8mb for everyday use, e-mail, Skype, TV, S_E, etc, and SAT for HD and downloading overnight. Need a clear month now from Sept 3rd to see if our usage stays within the 25GB's without the rug rats.

Will try Skype to see if there is an improvement over the slow Sky connection. If anybody is thinking of going this way let know first as I may be able to strike a deal.

Is your cabinet due for FTTC any time soon?

PM me your landline number if you want me to check.

More chance of me getting my race Super Licence Graeme.

5Km from the Keith Exchange, 3Km down the track on top of a hill, my neighbours are a run down farm owned by a mad farmer, and Jenkinson's old house that looks like Steptoe's back yard, both down in the valley.

As discussed G you need a homer, Tut gets the fibre laid and you do the connectivity...

That's what I've been looking at Sanj. Costs aren't even approachable unless you can share it with a lot of neighbors. There are grants of a few grand if you're not on the FTTC waiting list, which it seems Tut isn't. But there's 5km+ of fiber to install. It's almost impossible.

Need to do a site survey (i.e. pop in for a dram) and see what line-of-sight options there are.

Robin will be along in a mo to correct me :-)
As has already been pointed out latency impacts on the quality of the conversation you can have - there has been research in the past (when telephones were still done with wires) that showed somewhere around 400ms one way latency is the point at which a caller will assume the other party is stupid (it takes 800ms+thinking time to get the answer to a question at this point). Tut's latency of 600+ms is likely to make Skype hard work, but textual chat will be fine - people expect that to take longer).

Alternately, you need to learn to say over at the end of your sentence/question ...

Over & out

Carrier pigeons and USB sticks. The latency won't be great, but the bandwidth is huge.

You need a fair amount of error correction, though, as loss rates will be high.

I'm already working on the CRC algorithms for RAIP (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Pigeons).
