I am guessing they can drive away taxed (existing) but you send notification that it's sold and they apply for a new tax, you loose any remainder for that month they 'back tax' to the beginning of the month.
Longer term you have a valid tax - ongoing- and you notify when the vehicle you want it on changes and pay any extra or pay less depending on the VED band.
I actually think it makes sense although every car is potentially double taxed for the month it is sold

I received a tax disc just this month and it was just a colour print that I had to cut out as they had run down their stocks of proper discs to save money.

Regards the number plates.
You get ones that glue on, and if you try to peel it off half the numbers etc stick to the backing instead of the plastic, making it useless for anyone to steal your plate. Guy was struggling to get financial backing though.
Regards just getting normal plates made up for someone elses motor, they have made it mind numbingly difficult to just get a set made up, you basically need all your documents. However, as was pointed out elsewhere, only the honest have a problem, the crooked will get them no bother.

Sorry Ross, miss read it.

If it has been SORND and you tax it now it will take it from the beginning of the month, as if they let you tax it from the beginning of October you could be driving it now and robbing them of a month. You can only tax it 15 days ahead if it is already taxed.

I just bought my replacement car for my stolen 335d. - today
I pick it up on saturday, so i said to the dealer to date it today so that i can keep the 4 months tax on it !

I rekon some went onto the autotrader and found a 3 series grey coupe bmw and made plates & stuck them on it right away
as the ANPR cameras never picked the car up.

Aye but the ANPR would have picked you up and you would have felt the full force of the law if you were driving when your tax was up!
