Re: What a joke.......
The trouble with stats is you can come up with lots of different conclusions with the same information.
If a road has 1000 users, and there are 2 accidents, and another road has 10 users over the same time and has 1 accident, you can claim each road is the most dangerous.
Road 1 as it has a higher number of accidents, or road 2 as per user the numbers of accidents were higher.
Add into the mix the severities of accidents on a road, one road may have 20 fender benders, another may have only 2 crashes, but both fatal.
Think the trouble with the A9 is that there is an unusually high number of head-ons for a main route, plus as there is a lot of access roads onto the carriageway instead of slip roads, emerging cars pull out from stationary into 60mph traffic. I'm sure there will be stats for how many are caused by tourists, and possibly elderly drivers too (pitlochery and blair athol seem to attract them)
I think a lot of the accidents involve fatalities, due to the nature of the accidents.
Re: the government responsibility -
I'm not saying for one specific accident. I'm just saying every government have a duty of care to it's citizens, and if it's prioritising one route over another, it would have to prove to the people that the way it has prioritised them is correct.
I also realise that the forth road crossing has been foisted on them as the existing brige is in danger of falling down.
Seeing as in my personal opinion, I find one of the reasons for dualing the A9 is that it's a main road to the north of our country and it's an embarrasment that our infrastructure is so far behind, I can understand giving priority to the forth crossing, as if that had to shut it and there was no replacement it would be a major embarrasment to the country as a whole. Plus it would be detrimental to commerce. Which also brings me back to the A9 to improve commerse in inverness, and maybe breathe some life into the further north towns, we need it dualled.
If you go through wales, a lot of it's main roads are A or B roads, and while I know it's lost a lot through mining, it's going through some pretty grim times, and it's in part due to infrastructure not being there.
Sorry I may be going off on a tangent there, but if just for economic reasons I think it needs done.
To attract businesses we need to dual.

Re: What a joke.......
And before anyone says anything.
I think wales is a beautiful place with really nice roads, which are fun to drive.
I'm just saying to go from the northwest coast to the capital takes an extra ordinary amount of time..
P.s. There is me hitting enter before i've finished again.
I blame it on using a phone and not a laptop
(and being a bit of an idiot)

Re: What a joke.......
its the responsibility of the murderer who kills... not the government who didnt lock him up?
its the responsibility of the smoker who bought the cigs... not the goverment who didnt restrict their access/provide education?
its the responsibility of the driver who took a risk and went into oncoming traffic... not the government for taking away this possibility on a road locals know this kind of things happens?
The A9 is great, however its alot of single road curve - not that many places for the traffic to overtake safely. Lots of HGV on it. Some tourists. Main route, so many commuters. The list of the ingredients that make this a real-world dangerous road goes on and on.
IT would be great once they do duel it.

Re: What a joke.......
It is the responsibility of the Government to build the correct roads in the first place, then upgrade them as necessary as they do in England, public outcries virtually force them to do so if they wish to stay in Government.
We do not do public outcries.

Re: What a joke.......
Not entirely true Tut. It's taken lots of campaigning, a long time and many lives, but at last the Kilmarnock > Monkton stretch of the A77 is beginning to get upgraded. Instead of crossroads over a busy dual carriageway and numerous short slip roads onto it, the road will have grade separated junctions with flyovers, roundabouts and additional parallel link roads to homes and farms along the A77. Once the work is completed the perfectly straight miles long stretch will be back up to a 70 limit instead of the specs controlled 50 as it is now.
Will be more of a hassle for me heading north as I think the village is losing one of the roads to the A77, but will be better overall. It's also in addition to a great deal of work on the A77 south of Ayr, similar to the A9 in that much of the road was single carriageway and it's heavy with artics going to & fro the ferry to Ireland.

Well that's true at least.

Re: What a joke.......
So many mixed messages/opinions in this thread, it's hard to know SE's collective opinion...
Responsibility - yes, I agree entirely, that a very high percentage of accidents are caused by poor driving. But the apportionment of blame doesn't really help the innocent victim, the person who's last view was of an impatient/over-aggressive/idiot's car heading straight at them. This is where legislation, education (which appears totally ineffective nowadays), or highway improvement, can play a useful role. It's a similar story when looking at connections between Edinburgh and NE England - predominantly single carriageway.
Average speed cameras - if the average speed is 60 then what's the problem with installing them? You'd be fair tanking on to exceed 60 average anyway. Surely logic prevents a road being both 'dangerous' AND a facility to achieve average speeds in excess the Nat Limit? Of course, average speed cameras won't prevent banzai overtakes - so I guess I've just out-thunk myself!

Everybody on this forum should make up their own mind on matters like this. Collective opinions aren't worth much IMO...

Indeed Edmondo, a thread is already going. Although, to be fair, the title is worse than useless in letting you know what's on itneil wrote:Cough http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/vie ... 30#p438657
