This is not how a 30 year old me saw a 40 year old me (OK 41) spending his Saturday nights.

Yes it works, it was actually very straightforward to setup but... I bought it to use RAID1. Errm it comes with RAIDZ as part of FreeNAS but it doesn't appear in any of my menus. I suspect that this is because RAIDZ needs 3 discs and I only have 2.

Hmm off to stare at comman line stuff for a bit longer before I go to bed ;)

If in doubt:

Is raidZ mandatory for freenas? If not I might suggest a more standard raid setup with ext4 filesystem. If you only have two data drives and assuming you want to protect against failure then raid1 is appropriate for you.

No! It was just way too simple for a complicated lad like me to understand. For hours I stared at menus before deciding I had to run ZFS and then I wouldbe able to run a RAIDZ software thingy. Ten I realised the chip had built in RAID, only to subsequently realise (as the box went into permanent reboot) that it didn't work with FreeNAS.

Turns out all you have to do is select more than one disc when defining a volume. Then the magical words "Mirror or stripe" appear. That's it. 60 seconds. Done.

Yes. (the time consuming bit was trying to find a cable TBH. I have, it turns out, a plastic box full of cables (OK two boxes, more crates than boxes) in whihc I have been inexplicably keeping EVERY bloody cable I've ever owned. Charger for late 90s Palm pilot? Mini disc recorder? Every Nokia in car charger? I'm your man*. Network cable - I don't seem to have any...

Oh god does that mean I have to root through the big crates of pointless cables again?

PM me your address, I'll see if I can find it ;)
