That is quite a generalisation to make. Any evidence to back that comment up? Not only do my friends use facebook but many parents as well. Do they fit into those categories.

Re: how many of you like FACEBOOK ?
its become alot of people's presence on the web - their profile - their "home".
Even being able to register onto other websites using your facebook profile - in fact that is a killer feature.
yes some people play games on it.
others chat about how they are feeling.
others dont say much at all.
but you have the power to delete or hide updates - easy.
im on it to keep in contact with folk, its cheaper than mobile and easy too.
oneday something else will come along - probably - but it does work for some people, thats why there are so many folk of all ages using it - it does work.

Maybe it's time to embrace it a bit more.....

Re: how many of you like FACEBOOK ?
That's a good point Phil , OpenID should have held that mantle but FB Connect appears to be far more popular.PhilA wrote: ... Even being able to register onto other websites using your facebook profile - in fact that is a killer feature.
Re: how many of you like FACEBOOK ?
Facebook is just another morally vacant scumbag company trying to make money from stealing our privacy. That so many people are so keen to help them amazes me.
Social networking websites are "deliberately killing privacy" in order to make a profit, according to renowned security author Bruce Schneier.
Speaking at the RSA Europe security conference in London on Tuesday, the BT Counterpane CTO cited Facebook as the most heinous example of social networks cashing in on users' openness toward sharing personal details. "Don't make the mistake of thinking you're Facebook's customer, you're not – you're the product," Schneier said. "Its customers are the advertisers."

I guess you're one of those people that amaze me, then.
Facebook's entire business model is to allow advertisers access to you. That's it. They do this by having some of the worst security controls possible along with the seemingly monthly security breaches (like the one that allowed any application full access to people's mobile phone numbers and home addresses, or the one that allowed advertisers to mine people's friends lists) that grant companies access to you and your private details.
I don't use Facebook because I don't believe the dubious benefit of being able to see all the crap people post on there is worth becoming the target of grubby marketeers worldwide. That said, I do think the concept of Facebook is a good one - it's just clear that this particular company is untrustworthy.

Mark Zuckerberg (Founder of Facebook) to a friend during the early days of Facebook
Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuck: Just ask.
Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SMS
Friend: What? How'd you manage that one?
Zuck: People just submitted it.
Zuck: I don't know why.
Zuck: They "trust me"
Zuck: Dumb fúcks.

Re: how many of you like FACEBOOK ?
You are in control of what personal details you have up. I don't put up any details. I have it linked to an email address that I do not use for anything. I have never suffered any draw backs from using Facebook. I keep in contact with friends who have moved away at no cost to myself and have also re-kindled friendships with people I lost communication with, again at no cost to myself. Facebook is brilliant if you know how to use it right.puffin wrote:I guess you're one of those people that amaze me, then.

Re: how many of you like FACEBOOK ?
Yup, Luddite Alert. Ross kindly "bridged" the FB group and the SE forum for the weekend's event - thanks mate. However in the same way as I resisted an SE forum login for about a year (!) I am also steadfastly avoiding a Facebook account. This will inevitably fail for a number of reasons...r055 wrote: I do agree with you however that its getting harder and harder not to join these things... The Scottish Elises Group has been handy this week to send invites out for the camping that Campbell has organised - He is also resisting it!
a) no-one "adds their name to the list below" when I start organising a meet because they only ever expect to be "facebook'd" about such things, hence I end up camping on my own most years
b) Lisa caves in from pressure from her younger cousins to join the FB generation
c) [the most likely] one of our kids asks to get an account before they are halfway through Primary School and in the interests of responsible parenting we decide we better see what all the fuss is about...
I am really not interested in it one bit and if friends of mine will only stay friends via FB then that's up to them I guess.
OTOH it's a fascinating subject and I'm going to read the rest of this thread over lunch

Re: how many of you like FACEBOOK ?
I think it's more than just another forum though isn't it, Scotty, ref the data mining possibilities/risks discussed above, for starters?
I could be wrong but with a "regular" forum like this one, you read / subscribe to things based on the subject interest, whereas I get the impression that with FB you are reading / subscribing to friends as an entity? That being the case, on a "regular" forum surely it's very easy to filter out the what psi are my pirelli sport kumho contis at on my Skoda trash
As I said, I think the clock is ticking and one or both of me or Lisa are going to end up with some kind of FB account, albeit hopefully locked down far enough that it doesn't become just yet another way for us to get spammed.
For those discussing LinkedIn, I've always found myself thinking of that as purely a "live" contacts folder which updates itself as people move from one organisation to another. Neat. This is all I really need it to do. I know it's capable of a lot more, however...
