I think the change in the way it was being reported helped, people up in court, video of the police "robustly" beating the crap out of looters coupled with the crap weather calmed things down a bit.

Time to send anyone claiming benefit to do National Service. I wonder how many would be discouraged from claiming then. Get a job or join the army. Simple solution.
That's tongue in cheek... right?
Er no. Long term unemployed and claiming benefit should be required to enter into a training scheme or join up - or no longer entitled to benefits.
Obviously there would be some that because of health or other issues couldn't join the army but if your fit enough to be lobbing bricks through Currys window and carrying off a 42 inch plasma then army it is.

The army doesn't want them. Recruitment went through the roof when the credit crunch hit and I think there's even a waiting list to get into basic.

The foreign legion wouldn't want them either, they too have lots of applicants ( particularly from South America I think) who are far better qualified - much better criminal convictions than stealing a tele

Maybe not all of them but I reckon anyone convicted of a crime from age 16 to say 25 should be required to repay their debt to society by national service. :thumbsup

The decision to start off in the Magistrates Court then send them onto the Criminal Court so that they could get an increased sentence was a good plan.

A magistrate can actually give a sentence of upto six months, but yesterday a rioter/thief who was arrested running away with a TV was given a one days jail sentence, he had already spent 24 hours in the cell, so just walked away. What sort of message is that giving to to both the police force and the public when Cameron has empasised that the Courts have been given increased powers to award sentences that fit the crime?

The problem is were do they put them ?

I can't remember what country it is but there is somewhere that puts you in a list for jail (petty crimes only) and you simply wait your turn. It could be 2 years before you get locked up and you have it hanging over you. it would solve over crowding.

Our man with the TV could then get 6 months in jail, you wouldn't have to let him out early and he would be punished.

Can't fix this generation, so fix the next one.

No need for national service, just stop giving them handouts when they get knocked up. No more payments or houses. End of. If those who are not financially independent make the choice to breed, the whole package (parents and child) become the responsibility of their family and friends.

Announce that scheme and the problem will be solved at the speed of Blackberry. In 15 years, expect a drop in crime, better results in schools, lower benefits, health and police bills etc etc.

Norway, especially for drunk driving, last I heard it was a 2 yr waiting list and you serve the 30 day sentence by going into jail for the weekends ie 2 days at a time, thus allowing you to keep working. Must be an interesting conversation with the kids prior to leaving on Friday night.

Nope they will still breed and claim it's their human rights to have luxury goods, sky, tv, cars, etc.

Announce that from say 1 May 2012 (9 months) no extra benefits/housing will be paid for kids. Therefore you have time to pop your current sprog then it's thinking time, more kids does not mean more money or more space. Live with what you have and within your current means. Benefits will be frozen from now, so getting up the duff will not help, you must be confimed pregnant by say next week by your GP to claim this last round of kiddy cash.

Also all hand-out style befits will be ramped down to a minimum, payment will be by made by credit card that can only be used for food, no ciggs or booze. Make work available in the form of paid community service up to the current level of benefits, clearing rubbish, cutting grass, painting stuff, minimum wage stuff, but to pay for booze, fags and sky TV.

Formation of boot camps to offer low paid but permanent employment for those that want it for say 3 years, not regulars, not conscripts, but a sort of half way house to fulfil non-combat duties and to give basic discipline, training, teaching and skills. Option of then joining regulars or a structured return to work package.

Waiting list for prison is a good idea too, you do the crime it hangs over you for a very long time potentially. Right then grandad, that TV you nicked 20 years ago will now cost you 28 days inside.

probably other stuff too...
