Just helped my mate choose a laptop recently and specifically talked him into getting a Dell because it gave the option of choosing XP rather than Vista, which is what every shop forced you to buy.
I did try to turn him to the Mac side, but he was having none of it!
Gareth, I'm not sure what Vista is like for this, but when XP first came out, people recommended turning off all the visual enhancements (shadows, animations, etc) to speed the machine up. You may wish to try that with Vista too? Also, could it be these "gadgets" (totally ripped off from Mac OS X "widgets"!!!) that are using up memory in the background? You got many of them on your desktop?

1GB & Vista is going to be a pretty nasty experience i'm afraid. You either want to downgrade to XP (hint: It's really an upgrade), or try and get 2GB min, 3GB pref.
Like I said I 3 machines all running vista, one with 1.2GB (Slow as hell), one with 2GB (I can cope but it still struggles with things like Visual Studio and the various Adobe progs), and a 3GB machine which feels like XP on 1.5GB - very fast and stable.
Anyone know if MS bought a memory company pre vista launch?

Nope, but i did hear that they were working with HDD manufacturers to incorporate gig size flash areas on hard disks for use with vista! Dont think the hardware took off, but you can certainly use SD cards and the like to speed up the OS....EliseR wrote:
