Clutches are weak on the S2 Exige - don't know why - but many have failed (I guess 111R too). Mine was replaced early in life, though not due to wear - mine had a warped pressure plate!?

Cheers,

only bought the car 2 weeks ago !....someone has put doubt in my head today that that sort of thing may not be covered by warrenty . The car has only done 6000 miles . Can anyone shed any light on this as to be fair , i am bricking it a bit :(

As I read it, from what you've said, the car is less than 2 years old, it is then still covered by the manufacturers warranty.

If this fault is found to be a defect with the gearbox, and there is no reason for them to suspect it has been tampered with, then they should cover it under warranty.

Other option, if you have only had the car 2 weeks, is to return it as faulty to the dealer you bought it from, and let them fix it/deal with Lotus, if you bought it from a dealer....If it was a private sale, then speak to the seller about it, see if it has been in for gearbox problems in the past and what dealer it went to etc.

Flipside of that is the obvious "wear and tear" argument from Lotus meaning they dont have to sort it, which would lead to wranglings over who pays the bill.

You could kill a clutch through misuse in a few hundred miles, so miles is irrelevant. Look at the number of people paying a few grand for new clutches on Gallardos with less than 5k miles on the clock.

Obviously I hope it is covered under warranty, but its worth preparing for the chat they hit you with!

I got my car back last wed after 20 days at MMC. I got new synchros put in the gearbox for 3rd and 4th.. didnt last 50 miles so MMC have the car back. They will push for a new gearbox. When I was there, convienently, a coolant hose fell off the radiator... we all thought the radiator was fecked too. Am hoping that Lotus dont feck around and I get a new box this time.
Strange as I got a new box on the S1 and a coolant hose fell off that too!
Though I have had an interior fan failure on the S2 as well... just shows you that the S1 must be better!!

update:

Gave john at lotus a call today to see how things are progressing .....

After sending lotus the pics of my split gearbox , they have said they are not gonna send a new one . John has argued against this (i think) insisting that my clutch is in mint condition and in no way could have caused this to happen through abusing the car . So they have now asked for John to send a copy of my engine managment records to see how the car has been treated . Apparently they will be checking for things like standing starts .I am not really in the know here but would somthing like that not fcuk the clutch more than anything? Anyway thats not the point i havnt done any since getting the car ! In all honesty when i got the car in leeds it had 6200 miles , it now has 6800, these include a trip from leeds to glasgow , the rest were cruising about nothing eratic, Hit the limiter maybe 10 times in total . NO Standing starts , Car hasnt even wheel spinned yet . In fairness i do not know how the car was driven before me but i was told there was no track days and the car is in good condition , guys at MMC seconded this also . Even if the guy had some trackdays , does this mean who ever takes their "track oriented" lotus exige to a track has there warrenty void for doing a standing start at the start line ?

I really do not know were i stand here . Should i start going nuts with them or just accept the worst ?

Am i being scrutinised (Sp) for buying a private car ? lets say for example i bought the car from MMC , would lotus still be able to say no to a new gearbox?

This really is a horrible situation to be in my heads filled with worry , i dont have a spare3,4,5k lying about to fix this. Would take months for me to get .

anyone got any thoughts or advice on this?

Rev limiter is there to protect the engine and gearbox form overrevving, if it can't handle that then the rev limit is set too high. Standing starts should lunch the clutch long before the gearbox lets go, clutch is consuamable (Therefore not warrantied) but gearboxes are for life...

Lotus don't want to give you an expensive g-box and will look for an excuse, I suspect you might well have a fight on your hands. Stick at it though!

Good Luck, don't let the b'stards get you down!
