My sister has an Octavia estate, and rates it highly. I have also been in several Fabia VRSs and have been very impressed. There is, however, a noticeable difference in quality between the Octavia and my old man's Audi A6. So for full-on family spec, consider fast Subaru Legacy. 3.0R models, with 6-cylinder boxer, perm 4x4 and sublime handling plus strong spec. Also various import versions if you really want to blow the wee one's nappy off.
However Saddos R Us over here will be looking at likes of Skoda Octavia vRS estate diesel in due course. Boot the size of an A6 packaged into an A4-esque size body and plenty stuff for your money. But many will still baulk at the badge nae doot.
