that is one special car! when they made the car, there was a rule that only mass production cars can be used for WRC. and to achieve that they had to make 200 cars, though they were not planning to sell all of them in the market. unfortunately... the first car went on WRC and killed a few spectators and they had to remove the car from WRC for safety reasons. so basically ford ended up with a whole lot of cars (with a bad reputation). then of course followed the clearance SALE!
it was the this car which gave birth to the ford cosworth and escort.
and the history goes on.....

i luv that car... but for that money, i'd buy
1 elise
1 exige
1 340R
and the remaining goes for tyres and stuff :D

There was some awesome rally cars about then and soooo fast through the forests
Ah rally stuff, best motorsport ever. Well it used to be until they tried to take it to the masses

Toivonen was unfortunately killed in the Lancia S4. I remember seeing the S4 (had a turbo and a supercharger  ) when it first came out at Twiglees Forest (Between St Mary's Loch & Moffat) on the Lombard RAC rally in November many moons ago :!: . That was the debut of the 6R4 as well. Absolutely awesome. dont't think there has been anything quicker to this day. Saying that they were probably too quick 600+ bhp in some cases.

Group A cars were quick as well and the current WRC rely on masses of torque rather than BHP. Another fave was watching Stig Blomqvist in a Skoda (front wheel drive) finish 3rd up against pukka factory 4wd cars in the snow

You are of course right Clarkie it was a Lancia S4 - I stand corrected.
Was it Vatanen that had the big off in a 205 that caused him to suffer mental problems and depression ( and killed co- driver?).

For me the Quattros were the best when they first came into rallying they certainly upped the ante & at that time made EVERYTHING else seem slow !! Keith

Always wanted one, but now I'm old enough to realise you could only have one in a collection and I'll never have that much cash (unless my plan to sell advertising space in my sig file really takes off. Can add google ads to it do you think?).

Yip it was Vatanen, I read his book about 15 years+ ago and remember the list of injuries was unbelievable. It was a miracle he survived. Not sure about the co-driver. remeber they used the sumpguard as a stretcher to lift him back up to the road

Quattro really started it all. Remember seeing the A1 and A2 models in Keilder awesome. Again with Malcolm Wilson on the Scottish Rally, scandanvian flicking an A2 Quattro around the harpin on the Rest & Be Thankfull.

If anyone has the British Open rally Championship video from a few years ago, Malcolm Wilson was competing in an Escort Cossie, uphill to the hairpin in Craigvinean in 7th gear :!:

Steve Bannister with 'Ethel' in Dalby, late dave Metcalfe on the Manx in a Nova, Colin McRae doing KH anti clockwise, massive drift uphill out of Duffus, then out braking Robbie Head to the Hairpin at 120+ tuts. Fond memories

IIRC the road versions of the RS200 are pretty tame - they've only got about 220 bhp.

I've also seen the film of Henri Toivonen's accident - not pretty.
