I live in the far north and most tourists are german , french , dutch ect as the english think scotland stops at inverness ( or perth for most of them )
the german bikers love the highlands and sort a route then book syha beds or bunkhouses , so they know where they will be sleeping each night
if you book a syha some are basic but others can be a castle or a whole cottage on the beach
most folk who use syha hostles are walkers / climbers ect some very intresting folk
for large groups bunk houses maybe ok as well
just another option

just to let you know.. we're close to getting the routes finalised.
First driving day will be wednesday, we're planning to be staying in Oban
Thursday will be Oban to Gairloch
Friday will be Gairloch to a place called old deer
Saterday and sunday TBD
I'm currently hunting for hotels in Oban and Gairloch. Despite sending a shedload of mails, there's not a lot of response coming..

YvoTuk,
I have often stayed at the PierHouse at Port Appin which is not too far from Oban.
http://www.pierhousehotel.co.uk
When I am up there I first go to Oban as there is a lovely Seafood shack beside the ferry terminal in the harbour (ignore the ones closer to the road as this one is a lot better) to sample the local seafood.
Then pop along to Port Appin to stay and have a lovely meal at night.
I also use this web site to search out nice places when I am abroad:
http://www.sawdays.co.uk/maps/britain/index.html
May be worth an investigation to see if there is anything that takes your fancy. I have not stayed in any of the UK ones but the european recommendations are absolutely fantastic.
Enjoy your trip and watch out for the sheep !!
Cheers

Very good indeed, especially the food at the Old Inn

Yvo,
You might stand a better chance in Ullapool, it's bigger so more choice and about 45 minutes past Gairloch. I've stayed at The Ceilidh Place before http://ceilidhplace.com/ceilidhplace/default.asp
Fabulous breakfasts!
Mike.

Ceilidh Place also has a bunk-house/hostel section across the road for the budget conscious.
