I only managed a poorly 6 track days in 4yrs of ownership of my 111s  no idea of lap times though.

I'm hoping to get the Exige on track for the first time soon and get a few track days under my belt this year. I've not been on track since Duffus was changed (apart from a pax in Mckeans car, but my eyes were firmly closed) and I believe that it's now a lot faster. So, since I now have the S2 Exige and will also be driving a new track layout for the first time, my question is:

What gear are people entering particular corners in and how are the revs (basically, any problems anywhere staying on 2nd cam) on exit?

Oh, and when I do venture out, would any quick (but not too quick  ) drivers like to volunteer to show me the new lines through Duffus and help me get up to pace(ish)? 62s? I think I've got a lot of catching up to do...

Steve,
You should have no problems being on cam in the dry, gears are probably just the same as your old car:
2nd for the hairpin, up to 3rd and 4th on the pit straight.
3rd for Duffus right through to the exit of Clarks, up to 4th on the railway straight.

If you're fast enough through the chicane you'll be just nudging the limiter in 3rd (90mph) before braking for Clarks...

In the wet you can be off cam through Clarks and the hairpin but should come on cam just at the exit of both (in 3rd and 2nd respectively).

IMO lap times can be pretty meaningless at KH as the particular track layout that day will make a huge difference. Cone or 'tyre barrier' placement at the chicane for example could easily make 1-1.5 secs difference...

I don't see the point in getting hung up on timings. The methods that we need to use are inaccurate anyway.

Pick a person with similar spec who is going quicker than you and try and keep up with them, that way your learning lines and getting a quicker lap overall, once your quicker than them you pick a faster car/driver combo.

How do you think Simon has gotten so quick over the last year???? He's been following me :D

I agree with that. I have timed myself once or twice in the past (in my Elise), but made a conscious decision not to do it anymore as I reckoned that pushing harder and harder for a quicker time was likely to end in tears in the tyre wall  . It is nice to feel you are improving your skills and can maybe keep up with people who used to be quicker, but for me the best lap is the one where you come into the pit afterwards with a big grin on you face, regardless of the time :D

We should all go back to Chapmans law of lightness.
If some of you say you have no intention in going faster...why all the engine upgrades. Quickest Elise now a Honda with Super dooper charger with 300bhp+. Where does it end? 2 years time do we have Elises with 400+?

I say we all jump back to S1s with 120bhp K series.

I like your sentiment Gareth.

Stripping weight would be my aim if I was to be tracking my car regularly.

I like the idea of a Hayabusa engined Elise. I think ACBC would approve

I time my laps after the event not during. Using the camera footage which is bang on accurate. :D 8)

It's good to see if there is any progression with a recent modification, different tyre, different setup etc etc.

Best lap at the weekend was 61.3. Should be slightly quicker on a completely dry track. Hopefully. :? :D

At the MMC trackday last year one of the KH instructors took me out in my 111R and that was the same gear selection that he was using. It seemed like we were in 3rd gear for most of the track.

Around 58s in Thinfourths shed racer...just don't ask about gear selection. I think I was taking Duffus in 5th.

If you want lap times get a Caterham...or a Radical... :D

And if you don't have a trailer/tow vehicle, want to carry spare wheels, tools and a passenger or 2 then get an Evo. :P

Wouldn't mind a bike engined track car TBH but couldn't give up the Evo. :D

Who said anything about not wanting to go faster! :D That's the name of the game - I'm just saying that until your allowed profesional timing equipment then the best way is to go faster is by the method I described earlier.

Neh, just need to remove the brain.
I drive my aeroscreened Caterham from Aberdeen to Knockhill each time, no trailer, no spare wheels, basic tools. Drive on road tyres and drive home every time.

Stoopid but great fun.
