Sounds like a good point for that, or the fuel consumption.
I'd always wondered why any car would need an eight (nine in an Evoque?) speed gearbox, but the top three are probably so high you can do 80mph at 2000 rpm for major (supposed) mpg gains on the published figures.

I doubt I'd buy a manual gearboxed domestic appliance car, changing gears on humdrum journeys has become more tedious than ever on busy roads. Vw loaned me a six speed manual car while I waited for a DSG one to arrive, more often than not, I forgot to change up and found myself driving everywhere in fourth.
You're right though Tony, driving an auto on dull, crowded roads is about as involving as taking the bus, where time and wife allows, a manual gearbox and roads less travelled are my preferred options.

I have just changed my X5 for a diesel 3 series touring, I was not looking at anything other that an auto.
The 8 speed auto is a great box and for the type of driving these cars are designed to do I don't see the market for a manual.
I was on a long-ish drive at the weekend 50% motorway and 50% country roads in the Greek mountains which are a nice mix of open flowing corners and tight hairpins, having done the same run in my V8 X5 with the older generation 6 speed auto I found it often in the wrong gear which was a little frustrating, but in the 3 series with the 8 speed it was either in the correct gear or very quickly and smoothly corrected it with nearly no frustration.
Of course I would have much preferred to be in one of my red cars, but having a manual would not have made the journey in the 3 series any more enjoyable.

The 8 speed zf in the 640 suits the car down to the ground. I just fancy getting the m2 manual because I think it will suit the car and also down here we are still very rural so we can still actually drive. A 5 or 6 series manual would be a very tiresome beast I would think. I thought about a jaguar f type and for that I'd have went auto.
