Common for good reason 8) The BMW and Audi 3litre twin turbo diesels are immense. That Volvo will have you stopping at every forecourt to re-fuel.

The Volvo is averaging about 27 mpg.
Okay it's not great but I don't do a big mileage and the noise it makes is immense!
We made it from Edinburgh to Oxford before I had to fill up at Christmas, 4 up and boot full of presents! :)
If you're just making short journeys then forget it!

Funny enough this appeared on Pistonheads today......

Audi 4's and BMW's are all too big.

I know someone who would let their Audi S3 (fully loaded inside - Pano roof, DSG, funcy stereo, funcy seats, funcy interior lights, funcy push start, funcy hands free locking, debadged) go for a decent price for an SE member. 1 year old. Sepang blue. Easily sold to her indoors as a bigger A1 and not a boat (X5).

PM if interested as it has to go in the next 2 months.

very cheeky offer going in for an S4 as its a bit over budget and cheeky offer in for a nice and very highly specced X5 (which happened to be one of the mysteriously sold ones yesterday). Laura is a bit Luke warm on the S4 but loves the X5 and technically its her car (although somehow I'm paying for it) so I suspect we'll end up with the X5. As long as the 2 mutts fit and I can get my mountain bike and crap in the back I'm happy with either...

S3 or Golf R both got knocked off the shortlist a while ago as too small for the bi-annual Outer Hebrides trips where we carry more stuff than Steady Eddie...

Less frustrating progress today...

Golf R Estate should be back on the list.

Approx boot space (seats up/down) in ltrs

Golf R Estate 600/1600
S4 Avant 500/1500

Surprising, huh?

I'm on my second x5 and think they're really good, would have preferred an M5 but the Mrs insisted we got another X5 and since we were getting a puppy when we bought the most recent one it made sense.
I saw this one advertised, looks good: http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/t ... 256.0.html

Would trample over the wife and kids for a Golf R estate. Octavia vRS on steroids. Awesome practicality.

My s4 averaged 22mpg, could achieve 27 but you couldn't drive it like that. A great machine for the money so I could justify the fuel. I sold it when we got a second dog as the boot with 2 dogs left no space for luggage. Plus it had reached 50k miles and was still worth good money. I sold it to a dealer who was happy paying the private sale price. It was sprint blue so yes it's worth waiting for the right colour. The replacement was between an x5 or a cayenne, I tested both at Morrisons in Turriff's and went for the cayenne. That was 2 years ago and I still like it. A very comfortable place, lot is big enough for a divider between the dogs and the luggage(travall) which also lets you stack the luggage and keep the dogs in place.

I'd have a 5dr Golf R but I think the estate looks dull compared to an Audi Avant or BMW Touring.
