The hire car certainly has to prove who was responsible for the car for insurance purposes.

The law have to prove it was the person the hire company say it was.

There is a high chance (having had a hire car 'issue' previously) that the records are incomplete, lost or not filed properly. you may well just get away with it. if not, nothing lost if you ask the right questions.

As you say, you have loads of hire cars and don't always keep a track of them, you don't have recollection of that particular day or car. ask for a photo, detailing that if it was you you will take the punishment, but would like to be sure it was you in the 1st place.
This is my course of action. I have no paperwork left over for the car in question so cannot 100% say it was me.

Darn scamera vans - 80 in 70 to Perth from Dundee. That's 3 pts and 100 bucks generally aint it ?

Got heads up from the other side of the road too but didn't twig.

Scam Van would have been set for 79 on that road, you would have had the same penalty if you had been doing 94.

This has to be almost a record for collecting points at the lowest possible speed and a complete waste. Presume that it was a lack of concentration or no CC? When we convoy to KH, lead car has CC and it is just a sit there at a safe 77 until it is over with. I am not preaching of course, I lost my licence but that was for blatant speeding and complete brain failure. Just passing on experience.

I think that we all should be aware of the speed bands and penalties, that way if you deliberately want to take the chance and exceed the speed limits you know what you are in for and don't get three points for an extra 1mph and give them blood money on top of it.

This. A friend told me that when they feel like pressing on they just go to 93mph as that is believed to be within zone of avoiding court. I thought more than 25% over would see you in court? Anyone had 3 points for 90+?

Yep and five points for 97.

The Bands generally in this part of the world are 79-95, 3 points and £100. That will be from Scam Vans or Gatsos, stupid computers so no leeway. Patrol car at the side of the road will not normal bother below 85, if he does then it would probably for a little talk, bored and nothing much happening.

96-100 is a notification from Patrol Car or letter from the robots that you are going to Court and the likely outcome is 5 points and around £300. Over 100 varies too much, first thing you need is a Solicitor to try and get it reduced from automatic dangerous to careless driving. The 79-95 is not laid down just usually the norm, it can vary between Counties.

My advice as I have to be very careful, is to stick to no more than 10% over the limit on the main roads, and then only if you have CC, other wise 5mph. Back roads are different, if you are confident that there is very little chance of any enforcement as you know it well, then I enjoy it and speed is based on bends and not on straights. They are going to be 60's so your three point band is 67-84 or whatever leeway a cop car gives you. 30,40's you should not be speeding on.

In Scott's case I can only think that he was not even aware that he was over the speeding + limit, so was not even concentrating on it.

Thank you Tut, that is really useful advice.

Kicking myself to be honest.

Stupid question probably , what is a "CC" ?

Cruise Control. Only in some later models and very often an extra.

An actual 80 will generally be an indicated 85-90 depending on vehicle and speedo quality. So if you dial in 80 on cruise, or your wedged right foot (S1 technique!), there is little to fear.

Not that I would condone speeding in any circumstances :-)

Cruise control is a must for me now, what with all the average speed cameras and stuff. Generally only a £200 - £250 option too so very much worth it.

Don't mess them about too much. I asked for photo proof of who was driving then sat on it. Had moved from flat 3 to flat 6 during this period so it was a rozzer looking for promoting who scanned the car park and saw me in a new spot then came chapping at my door. Cautioned me and then asked if I was planning on responding to the letter.

I was stopped by a patrol car recently for doing 85 on the M90 and given 3 points. Fine day, light traffic and "yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir" so I was a bit disappointed to get the points. I had broken the rules so just took it on the chin.

Right on the dividing line Gary. Bit like the missus, depends on the time of the month. If he had been given a BJ that morning you would have probably got off.

ps:- I meant by the missus of course not you, however on second thoughts.....

@Tut , nothing in the post yet, can I breath a sigh of relief yet ?

I guess I was going a few MPH under what the speedo was saying or the camera was focused on the chap in the fast lane trying to hide behind another car.

Bit confused here Scott, when you said 80 in a 70 I presumed that you had been sent a ticket from a Scam Van that had clocked you. Are you saying that you saw a Van and the speedo was saying 80?

You would have had a ticket inside of four days if you had been clocked, so you were in the clear weeks ago.
