There a bit of a history with this and Avons. They even recalled stock from suppliers when they first where introduce IIRC. I think this more to do with compound shrinking faster than expected as they age. Worth contacting Avon, they did some free replacement with the Caterham guys who complained.

I ended up with 38 psi in France to get the temp right. Made a huge difference. Not sure about the Zzr as a road tyre, to many issues and my 5 seconds to destruction on Frolic.

I've now run out of tread on the rears I took to France last year. The tread / sidewall crack on the inside of both rear tyres has been present since returning from frolic with 4mm tread left. I've run 32psi cold on the road and the tyres have held up fine until I realised they were illegal! I think David has something; the different compounds for tread and sidewall part company probably due to the number of heat cycles but still adhere to the carcass. Not sure why it's always the inside of the rears which shows the separation first? I wouldn't not use the tyres because of the cracks, but again, I've also seen 2-3mm of tread disappear in the space of a few laps at the end of the tyres life.

Doug,

If you were running 32 cold and it still happened to you, then that makes me feel slightly better with Davids and your explanation making sense.

I will give Avon a call on Tuesday and see what they say and I will ask if the guys racing in the Lotus Cup are having the same problem.

I wonder how much heat cycles the tyres can have before delamination takes place?

Just my 2p worth here as well Steve, I was running mine at 30-32psi all frolic as had been aware of this happening. Made not a jot of difference and I had exactly the same problem. Took them off the car as I wasn't happy about it but had to go back to work before I could pursue it with Avon. Sitting in my garden if anyone wants them...if not they will become flower pots :lol:

I would think that the inside edge goes first due to the extra load on it most of the time given that there will be some camber on the rear wheels. Just my 2p

Pretty sure avon revised the V6 spec ZZR's ealry last year. i recall they were having the same/similar problems in the trophy races with them.

If the tyres were bought early last year then they could well be the last of the old stock you had on.

It maybe worth a call to Avon to find out exactly what and when they changed the specs of the tyres, there should be some form of manufacturing date on the ones that have failed above to find out which ones they are.

If they are the old type it maybe worth trying the newer revised ones
