Many of the RAF & RN crew have already moved to Bristows as part of the contract. So same guys but with better equipment! :)
I've heard some grumbling that the new choppers (fnar) being used, whilst more powerful, flexible and modern, suffer from a much greater downwash than the Seaking - which will make the winchman's life a lot harder. Not sure of the validity of that - was just one dude's opinion. Seaking reportedly had a really controlled downwash for something the size of a bungalow.

Any thoughts from the more qualified chopperists on here?

Have asked my SAR Cornwall Navy mate the question. Have noticed the new choppers are much quieter; they still pass low just behind my house on their way north.

The downwash is much much worse than the sea king.

Going to be much harder to do the same rescues that the sea king was able to.

That's coming from a mate who's on the winch.

Surely a fairly major oversight on the designers / engineers part?

Big beasts, therefore reasonable downwash.

Flew in one this morning, and the downwash during boarding will obviously only be a fraction of during flight.

The downwash from James' new mini drone is bad enough. Brave lads.

We had both the S92 and Puma for a while, can't honestly say there was much difference when on deck. I had to cover the helideck role for several years when we were on minimum manning and I would doubt that there is much difference in what you feel during boarding. However standing at the fire monitor during take off the S92, yep you can tell it is a big un.

I must say, they are impressive beasts. Would take one of those over a sea king or a puma any day. I crew changed in an S61 for many years before the puma came into service, now that was a step backwards if ever there was one. The S92 is a big stable powerful machine. I honestly think it is a major step forward.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

The new ones can't land all the places the Seaking could either. I don[t know this for a fact but I don't think they can land on the S General.

The SeaKings couldn't either, designed only for the Scottish Air Ambulances.

A colleague is in the Lomond Mountain Rescue squad, and says the new ones are impressive, but the downwash is significantly more than on the Sea Kings, enough to blow you off a ridge.

Taken during an exercise. So they technically could - albeit they perhaps weren't intended to be regular visitors.
