Roller garage door help (nlc)
Re: Roller garage door help (nlc)
yep I would, you might find a youtube video showing the installation process if its a common model.
The installation itself was very simple, there were a couple of tricky bits which took time to figure out. There were a few items I had to transfer from the old motor to the new one - the transmitter receiver an installation bracket and the wiring for the remote wall switch. I had to make a connection on the unit which told the system a remote switch was fitted and there were other connections if you had a door sensor etc. All of this was covered in the instructions - so if you get good instructions or find them online then it should be straight forward.
Finally the calibration and training the remotes to work with the receiver. The two button menu system on mine was very confusing, but eventually I got it.
I'd certainly get the motor and see if you can DIY especially if you can search out good instructions, if all else fails, you can get the guy round and hand him the replacement motor to fit.

Re: Roller garage door help (nlc)
So I thought I would just update this thread.
I had someone come to visit to quote and they neglected to work out which shaft I have and as such I was difficult for them to do a proper quote. They did however verify that the motor is knackered. They then asked me to take some photos of the shaft and this was almost impossible without removing the shaft from the mounts, after disconnecting the door itself. (turns out its a fairly unique SWS version) After doing this the motor is only held in by 2 pop rivets and after borrowing a neighbours drill I was able to remove this too. I have now ordered a replacement from Germany £195 all in (£105 cheaper than the UK supplier!!) and fingers crossed it will be fairly straight forward to replace.
I could have replaced the motor with a far cheaper version from ebay (£60) but these do not come with the correct fitments, no warranty and I think I would have struggled to modify this myself.
All in all I definitely think its worth having a go yourself IMHO.
Thanks for all the input offers of helps etc!

More disturbingly,.. .one has to question what sort of company Ed is dealing with.. they asked him to take photos of his shaft FFS!!
Mr Smee might have a powerful zoom lens for that
