Agreed that seems like something that should be possible.

I just spent some time looking into the waiver. The best I can find is that you have 14 days to file a SORN from the date the vehicle is off road. It is difficult to tell whether that also relates to tax and insurance, but in practical terms I would assume that's the time they would need to wait to determine if the vehicle has been SORN'd before a fine is issued.

Anyone ever got a fine within 14 days?

Luke was offshore and went three weeks before renewing, but did not hear anything.

I sold a car to my mate, it went into the trade and then I did nothing with the paperwork, and the fine for not having taxed it arrived automatically but it wasn't insured anywhere either and that didn't generate a fine...

And the fine was for having it untaxed even though it was taxed. Immediately it went into the trade it didn't need tax, and I could prove that had happened, but because they hadn't received the change of ownership paperwork I was fined.

(Actually thinking about it was insured on a trade policy but like the OP said I doubt that is checked quite as effectively.

I got a letter reminding me that I had failed to tax the bus - "last chance" is written on the letter - at that point it was one month untaxed and all I had to do was pay the back tax - that was August this year.

Pete - in your case is it possible the trader immediately cashed in the tax?

Robin
