That's old hat that is, my mate used to drive his mk3 Cortina using mole grips for a steering wheel.
Funnily enough he ended up in a ditch upside down one day............ :damnfunny

As for the theiving scumbags - we've got an alarm system that sounds whenever our front or back door opens, I'd reccommend fitting something similar, it's very handy. That combined with two dogs who love to bark at anything that moves will hopefully deter any potential key pinchers.
