Compleletly agree with the above. It is a golden rule of a private buy not to view the car away from the owners house. Whilst I am no elise expert, I have been on hundreds (literally) of car deals in my life and would never purchase a car from meeting someone in a private place (unless it was a couple of hundred quid banger where the risk is minimal). Watch the car warm up etc as stated above. Check HPi and VIN vs V5. I would certainly take Alan's (?) (AJT) kind offer to go too.

I went out in my mates Elise for about 30 mins (cheeRS Smee!!!) so I could get used to what to look for with the temperatue gauge, prior to viewing any car. I think with the elise being a lotus and a bit fragile in comparason to a german saloon car, it pays to know exactly what to look for.

Robin was extremely helpful when I was looking for one too. :) CheeRS Robin.

Getting a drive and a look round /chat about an SE'ers car helped me alot when I was looking. Thanks to AndyG and Gogs for that.

Thanks for all the tips, The guy said i could meet him at his home but i had things to do in edinburgh this morning and said i would meet him at the bridge, in the end he drove through to my house and i had a good look at the car and also had a mechanic im very friendly with to have a good look around the car, The owner of the car had all the paper work and i had a good looked through and it all seemed genuine, Had a shot of the car also and everything felt smooth as ive driven my mates type 72 before,
The owner is going away to Dubai to work in the next few weeks so i managed to cut the price down and get myself a very good deal & he is also going to put it through mot next week for me, So i should hopefully be driving in it in the next few weeks depending how quick he gets his plate of the car,

As for the finance their is none on the car. :)

I agree entirely with Scotts comments. . Viewing a car anywhere other than the owners gaff would set alarm bells ringing for me too

Well done on getting the car.
Remember AA parts and labour warranty is a good thing to have and will take the sting out of any breakdown repairs.

Whilst I would agree with most of the above rules around viewing, nothing is ever risk free!
You can tell so much about someone when you see their home environment .............if it's clean, neat and tidy..........then the car is likely to be kept that way as well :D
I do not practice what I preach and end up buying cars from motorway services and airports as the cars of interest get further afield.
In an effort to reduce any risk, I google the name, mobile phone number and look up the electoral roll to see how the results relate to a"private seller"
Facebook is also an interesting place to research, I use it all the time when recruiting new staff!!!

The mobile phone listing is an easy one to study and it could provide an interesting list of current and past advertising activity

:cheers
