Unbelievable!!
These, I'm sure random and hopefully one(2) off incidents are in no way indicative of the level of 'hatred' towards the english.
I'm convinced that if we 'the scots' had qualified for the world cup, we would be too interested in our own performances and the media would be spreading the coverage thus reducing the shove it down your throat effect. The truth is if you don't want to listen to the evidently english biased commentaries, switch it off.
As for the previously mentioned idiots, they would have been as likely to use club colours to show their bigotry. This is ridiculous, after all its only a game!!!!!!!!!!

if evolution don't take care of it, redesign it
I'm not so sure that it's all to do with media commentery.
I've notice a trend toward patroitism, (scotch beef/lamb was only the start of it) and with that folk will start to look at their roots and when you do you uncover the years of violence that has existed between the two neighbours.
I recall the conversation over the dinner table at MT on the Friday, it was in good nature as you would expect as was the displaying of St.George's cross at the pub on Saturday (just so happens the only place with enough space was the dart board).
I can see how the less educated (polite term for fecking moron) can get excited by this.
We seem to be trying to get folk to accept the diverse cultures that we have now by proclaiming us all to be "scottish" or "english", in my mind all this is doing is widening the dived between the home countries.

Substitute Scotland with "the majority of humankind" and you're probably nearer the truth... We're hearing about it because it's on our doorsteps - and it's abloody disgrace. Just as much as the Turks in Germany, or the French-Africans, or the Basque in Spain or any minority in any other country (don't start me on the States)Sanjoy wrote:Put simply it is the shame of Scotland, rangers celtic, scotland england black white etc there is always something.
The probem has, as Mac astutely pointed out, been enflamed by the increasing national separatism we've seen over the past 20 years. I'm as proud to be Scottish as anyone, but that doesn't and shouldn't automatically mean I hate the English. For a scary percentage of the population, that's exactly what it means (and it's the same or worse in a lot of countries)

Are we any different from any other European country? Or further afield for that matter?
It seems to me that the only TRUELY integrated countries are those that have been brought up with a multi-national culture such as Canada and to a lesser extend Australia.
Hatred for your neighbour is nothing new - look at the balkans.

Is that 'great minds think alike' or 'fools seldom differ'?mac wrote:Sanjoy wrote:Put simply it is the shame of Scotland, rangers celtic, scotland england black white etc there is always something.

Well it's cause of the football rivalry (made 100x worse cause of the media forcing it down our throats) innit.offshorematt wrote:Scottd wrote:What is missed (on purpose) by the media is that these attacks wouldn't of happened if these people weren't wearing English football shirts. Explain?
Just a theory tho, wouldnt take it too seriously

I think what Scott is trying to say is that if it had just been a bloke with an English accent, then it wouldn't have happened. The farkwits in this case could have seen the England strip as an incitement to violence.
Total sh*t if that's the case though - and whether it still constitutes racism, or whether it's then football related violence is an argument that could run all day.

Yeah - but that's very much as case of reaping what you so. Sterotypical it may be but Scottish exports are known to be Whisky, beef and football supporters.
Most folk thing of the English abroad as the folk who SHOUT to make themselves understood, no matter what the spoken language of that country, bands of drunken louts lining the beachs and night clubs or Palma Nova or alike and football hooliganism.
I've been on holiday in middle of France where there isn't as much tourism and seen the folk in front of me ask for "Egg n chips twice love", when the waitress shrugged she then asked for "EGG N CHIPS TWICE".
My french is fairly poor but I have notice than a please or thankyou in French goes a long way to getting you what you want.
