I recently bought my first D-SLR. I went for a Nikon D40. There is a newer model - D40X. but the 'old' one has some great reviews and does me as a beginner just fine.

The D40 is available at few high street stores just now (Currys etc) with the 18-55mm kit lense for about £260. Well worth a look in my opinion!

was playing around for an hour today reading the manual etc. while she was away up to Asda.

Only really ventured around the house today, but hopefully take it out in the daylight tomorrow for some testing.

Here's a couple I took...
Floyd looking really p1ssed off with me sticking the lens in his face...

Not too bad for your first shots. Like the water one.

One thing I do notice from your EXIF data is that you are using ISO 800. They don't look too noisy but you should probably try and turn this down to 100 or 200.

reminds himself that his ISO was up at 800 for Knockers for the last few hundred pics of the day, must remember to ramp it back down!!

Ross, photos look good for your first few, and your water one interesting! I buy a lot of the monthly magazines for the advice, and perhaps more so for inspiration (not naturally an inspiring guy obviously! Or don't have the arty farty talent most probably required to compose a great shot!) so the continual wasting of £££'s every month on Digital Camera etc provides some useful ideas and good tips!

Cheers,

Dave
