What about a really big adjustable spanner ? Ask Stewart to borrow the one from our work .
Hmm, it has to grip a smooth tube, and a Stilson will actually bite in.

Are there not holes in the smooth tube that allow you to wind up the spring with a series of 1/4 turns by a 6mm bar in the holes?
