I was thinking of getting a puppy for Sandra as we have always wanted a dog, after seeing Zoe we were completely smitten on working cockers.

As Sandra's birthday was coming up in August, thought I would do some forward planning to see if Zoe's breeder had any puppy's coming. Unfortunately nothing was coming up however she did let me know of "Star" who had failed gun dog training and gave me the details of the owner.

So we have decided to join the SE Puppy club with Star (15 months old) and to really keep it in the SE family, Star is Zoe's brother.

Here's some photo's:

Would like to say a very big thanks to Dom/Ross for all you help and advice.

We have had Star for over a week now and our lives have definitely changed, thankfully for the better. We had him at the Highland show on Friday and were amazed about the number of compliments that he got and even better that he behaved impecably.

Only expenses that we did not factor in was the number of washes our jeans are getting, it appears that "Star" is a perfect advert for the Persil challange.

If only they stayed that size! My first dog but really wouldn't have anything else - Tia has an amazing personality, yet shows her protective side with strangers. I would however, like her to stop barking at kids as much but because we don't have any kids in the family it's been more difficult to get her used to them.

That's why we bought a spaniel - perfect for fitting in the elise with the GF. :D Your pup looks like it will be a big dog!

Lovely new dogs - congrats to all.

At 18 months you still have time to train out the bark-at-kids stuff.

A bag of chicken and positive reinforcement is the best way, I think - i.e. engineer situations where there are kids about and feed her lots of chicken for so long as she ignores them.

I am pretty sure there are some professional dog trainers that would use aggressive behaviour to intimidate her whenever she does it, but I don't think that's a good (the dog is still wary of the kids, just even more scared of the trainer so doesn't bark - instead they just bite, eventually).

If you cannot get this to work you should get somebody to help you ASAP. I have a friend that specializes in this sort of stuff (in Edinburgh, unfortunately for you) - he could probably help you or at least give you some advice.

Cheers,
Robin

Totally agree there Robin, and if there's no chicken to hand, little cubes of cheddar do nicely, or severely over-microwaved liver chopped up is a mega favourite, just be warned that the while house will stink :blackeye

LOL My dad's a butcher so we have plenty of treats in the house. We have a dog walker due to work commitments and she's excellent with Tia. She gets her kids involved whenever possible but as said, I reckon that the only way to deal with it is to engineer opportunities!

George,
I think we nodded at one another at the highland show with a mutual appreciation of working cockers! I was sitting down on the grass with our two mutts and you were walking back from the forge.
I've not met you before so not sure!

Think I remember that, pity that we did not speak as the story would have clicked and we could have chatted some more.

Here's a photo from the show which may confirm if it was me you saw:

As you can see Star is looking a little bit concerned in case he is next on the menu.
