At 3k the only thing I would consider (for a commuter) would be a Focus 1.6. The 1.6 is the sweetest engine of the range and it's quite entertaining to drive.
Reliable, economical, cheap all round, good chassis, not an embarrassment to drive, it'll sell on very easily

..Mazda 6 diesel.. 2.0L 136bhp.. '02/'03 from £3400 on autotrader.
They're very good.. I've got a '04 Mazda6 TS (almost full option) 2.0L diesel with 35k.. £8500. Had Mazda's in the past and never had a single problem.
Bomb proof cars with a wee touch of style ,even if they are still a bit boring. Handling and performance very good, and quiet for a diesel.
Worth a look.
