New Nurburgring Record?
Not sure if anybody else has posted on this...In 18 days time BMW M Sport are having a big shindig at the Nurburgring, with all sorts of track based activity...
Nick Heidfeld will be driving an F1.07 round the Nordschleife - First time an F1 car has run there in a long time...
Bit of debate on whether it'll be a few 10 minute 'cruise rounds', with t/c off oversteer at the spectactor vantage points...
...or if he'll get the chance to have a pop at Stefan Bellof's all time record of 6:11 set in his Porsche 956...
Bear in mind racer mentality, and the fact that a Carrera GT / Zonda F can lap in 7:30 on road tyres, and the record could very well fall...

Its at the top of my list of things to do in the S1.
I would think that they will have to play around with suspension settings to get a good lap out of the F1 car. With all those bumps and humps - not sure a current F1 car has the suspension travel to get the most from the potential given BHP per ton and the aero these cars run!

will be interesting to see how much/little wing they put on the cars, agreed that the lumps and bumps will be pretty unsettling for a current F1 car. Still, given the publicity generated so far, you'd think BMW would pump a few hundred grand into fettling the suspension for this alone.
I gather the official line is that its not a record attempt - aye right!!
Am I right in saying the last time a GP was raced there was when Lauda incinerated himself?

The 956 that Bellof set the current record in was a group C car with slicks / groud effect...(Also the car he met his maker in, after trying to overtake round the *outside* of Eau Rouge at Spa...jamie wrote:Have any group C racers ever ventured out I would have thought they would have been more sorted for it.
Aero wise it will be a pain as well the car is designed to be run low ride heights they crank them up a bit for Monaco and Brazil but I think they will need even more.

A modern LMP1 would probably manage to beat it - The Audi R10 is used to running on rough street courses in the ALMS, so would be more suited than an F1 car imho...
