Wireless Network Help
Guys
The laptop arrived safely after just a week. Good service all round from Dell.
The router arrived mid week off eBay and I have managed to get the laptop onto t'internet with the WiFi thingy.
Tonight I was trying to set up a netwrk to share files. I realised I didn't have a clue. After a bit of mucking about I managed to share the relevant folders and all was well.
Unfortunately somewhere along the line I have managed to do something to my desktop. I think I tried to add a client or something. Anyway now when I boot up the desktop it is asking for a password as under

I can easily skip by this by hitting enter (without entering a password) but it is a pain. Once I get to the desktop I get one of these error things that asks to be sent to MS. It says something about TCP/IP or sonething like that. Anybody any idea what I have done and how to get rid of the annoying password prompt on the desktop machine.
I am annoyed with myself for adjusting a setting without taking a note of what it was so that I could reset it if need be.
Any help/thoughts greatly received.
Cheers
Stewart

If you want to use the Welcome screen instead of the classic login:
Start->Settings->Control Panel->User Accounts (you may have a slightly different route to this depending on which version of windows you have, and whether you're running in Classic or XP mode in the control panel).
There are three "tasks" as M$ B$ goes ...
Change an account
Create a new account
Change the way users log on or off.
Click on the last one and there is an option there to choose between the classic Logon prompt and the "Welcome" screen. The latter is the on where there is a column of avatar type icons on the right, one for each account, and you just click on the one you want.

OR If you just want to dive straight in with no login at all:
Start->Run ...
Enter cmd and press enter. You should get a black command line window popping up. Type
control userpassword2
and press enter.
You should get the prompt back and another window appears. There is a check box at the top that says "Users must enter a password to use this computer."
If you clear this and press "Apply" then another window pops up into which you should enter Stewart as the user name and leave both password fields blank. Press OK and OK again, exit the silly command window with "exit" and job done.
Windows, it's easy

Thanks Robin. I managed to sort it. I had installed MS Network Client or some such thing. I uninstalled this and it did the trick, so all happy now.
Enjoying the freedom of the laptop, I am looking forward to the warm summer evenings spending a couple of hours of an evening sipping beer/wine whilst surfing for rubbish on YouTube
