Have you looked into
PHPBB3 ? Its something we are currently trialing on the CTR forum. I am led to believe its quite different and with a lot of new features. Downsides are its still pretty much in development and would probably require a fair bit of IT knowledge and time to do the switch.
Maybe something for the future if additional security is required.

Yeh, was wondering if it was finished yet but it's still in beta.
