For anyone who has trouble getting out of bed in Winter....

Post by Michael » Sun Dec 03, 2006 4:56 pm

Something that has changed this whole procedure for me in the winter which is normally a nightmare is the following....

Basically, hook up a dim lamp in your bedroom to an electrical timer. Set it to switch on half hr before your alarm clock. This stimulates your subconscious to believing it is daylight - it really works. Shouldnt be bright at all...just enough to light up the ceiling - your eyes will pick this up. If its too bright you might hide under the covers.

Set alarm clock to radio mode with Classic Fm - personal preference ( wake up material only btw  ).

As back up, if your room is cold, hook up an electric blanket set to Full along with the lamp on the timer half hr before the alarm. You dont want the blanket to be just a little warm - this will prolly make you Stay in bed!....its supposed to make you a little TOO warm, by the time the alarm goes off, so that the cool room is a relief and actually a stimulant - the cool temp, when you get out of bed, will constrict the peripheral blood vessels in your skin forcing more blood to your brain for a moment.

Ive found this to be better than the tradiional piercing alarm clock sounding in complete darkness when your brain thinks you havent had enough sleep yet because its still "night time".

With this, I find im already half awake by the time the alarm goes...aaah thats better :thumbsup

Sounds like a plan. I have great difficulty in getting any sleeping pattern, with constanly swapping shifts, and work phones through the night. Really knackers your health too. Not for much longer as I have now quit my job

Could use some techniques like that to re-train myself into the habit of sleeping, and at normal times! I don't know how other shift workers manage it!

I bought one of these ... BODYCLOCKS HERE! a couple of years ago.... so I now have a nice sunset every night and wake up in a nice sunny room all winter....

It has definitely made the winters feel shorter and easier... nothing worse than being ripped out of a nice sleep to find yourself in a dark room !!

Weekday routine.......

Alarm goes off at 0700. Verian gets up, wakes up Luke, who goes into the shower. Makes tea, brings me in a cup in bed, along with Thors Bonios who is sleeping on the floor alongside.

Wakes Ian at 0715, who takes over the shower from Luke. Makes them tea, cereal and toast, then throws them out of the door at 0810 for the School bus.

I adjust my electric bed to the reclining position, catch up with the news on TV, and power up the notebook to check on e-mail and eBay.

0830 and Verian brings me breakfast, alternates between bacon, egg, tattie scones, poached eggs on toast, or tomatoes on toast, with espresso coffee, and then watch Frasier.

However on Sunday, she gets a lie in.

SWMBO used the Lumie alarm for a while - weird but effective - I was usually well out of the door before she woke up

Have just seen this one in Johnnie L -
