Ross - brief slightly confusing. I may have to transport them also, as there will be a point where my mum's Panda will bounce us into sea-sickness.

So car is dual purpose - me to Aviemore, parents to Inverness (A9) and me back home again.

Shortlist:
- Yeti
- Mini Clubman (Cooper / S)
- Swift
- Polo ? Golf ?
Emira - Volvo spec
A1 Black Edition - Ilford HP5 spec

Clubman would be fwd only at that budget (previously mentioned Paceman if you want 4wd).

Focus on winters would be the answer if going fwd.

Great shortlist

Ignore 4wd as a criterion

And all-season tyres (eg Michelin CrossClimate) are a fine compromise for cold / wet / snow if you don’t want to juggle a set is spare rims for full winters.

You’re nearly there!

You may notice the space diffs between Polo-Golf, Swift-Yeti. And Clubman is good for rear legroom compared to regular hatch, but may feel a touch smaller than the Golf. It will have the best chassis however. (Unless you go GTI obvz )

Countryman rather than Clubman ?

I ended up with a Countryman diesel S (2013) for a time.
Still not that fast even as a S.
But pretty good rear seat legroom (more than the Golf I bought afterwards) and increased flexibility as rear seat bench slides back and forward.

Obviously chunky looks for a Mini but once you make peace with that, it’s a reasonable car.

Good choice of colours in Mini compared to all other manufacturers. Although we ended up with a black one as I had to buy at short notice :?

Couldn’t bring myself to mention the Cuuntyman … but Ian, you do make good points. And a positive user report too!

Some great suggestions in there. One point of consideration; how is your parents' mobility? My parents can only realistically get into a crossover now. As much as I really don't like crossovers (other than Yeti and Duster), they do have their place for older folk. Not too low to get in and out of, and a high enough roof line that then can manage to fold themselves into.

I would echo comments about not requiring 4wd but winter / all season tyres are very useful.

Polo?: we had a seat ibiza (near enough same thing) on winter tyres. It was great. Nearly as effective as our volvo xc70 on all season tyres.

Golf?: My golf R was a great car; but never put it on all season or winter tyres (no need with XC70). Despite AWD it was awful on ice/snow. Tyres are the answer.

Golf is a good bit roomier that polo.

£5k could get you into a leggy F55/6 (2014 on) Mini Cooper (3 cylinder 1.5), or a 100k miles+ S (2.0 turbo).
They use the BMW engine not the Prince engine of previous Minis so add some reliability.
Obviously also fwd, but on winters mine always feels competent, and it's fun.

15 years ago, the answer would simply be Suzuki Ignis Sport, but I think they've all disintegrated at this point.
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
'18 Mazda Mx5 - The wife's, so naturally my daily
'19 Ducati Monster 797 - Baby bike bike

FWD with winters will go pretty much anywhere - my old MKIV VR6 would drive to its bonnet in snow on its winter tyres!
