Le Man vs Le Man Classic 2020

Did Silverstone Classic this year which I enjoyed, nice event and experience and didn’t really cost that much for a 3 day weekend.


Early days but considering Le Man or classic one for next year.
I’ve not been into sport cars for years so it’s more about the experience than teams/drivers/cars.
Happy to camp.
Don’t want to take a week off work to do it but probably a bit older and more sensible than doing a 20hrs day to get to France which I did many years ago for family camping.

Looks expensive and Classic dearer than Le Man so which is best and why ?
Any advice and will it cost lots ?

I've done both several times and enjoy the Classic more these days, but you should experience the real thing at least once in your life!
The Classic is a bit less 'stag weekend' and attracts a lot of interesting classics in the campsites as well as the many club displays in the infield.
Get an overnight ferry on the Thursday night from Portsmouth to Le Havre or Caen and either back on the Sunday night (easily done) or Monday if you fancy an extra night camping.
Get your ferry booked now or as soon as bookings open for best pricing and availability.
We usually camp at the circuit (e.g. Camping Epinettes), the facilities are good and you're not queueing half an hour for a shower like you used to.
In 2018 my Classic trip cost just over £800; about £350 for the ferries with cabin, 55e for entry ticket, about £200 in fuel and tolls.
I'd be surprised if you get to the main race for less.
Unfortunately I can't make either next year

Doing LMC next July with a few mates - currently looking like my Cerb along with a couple of Morgan Aero 8s, a 991.2 GT3, a 930 turbo, a 964 Carrera plus some others, so thoroughly looking forward to it! Last time I did the LM24 was in 2006 in my Caterham on the Superfast ferry from Rosyth to Zeebrugge so can't recall the costs!

As most will know, 2021 was also postponed, but we eventually went in 2022, in my old Alfa, and it was absolutely amazing

Ah Bugger. I was all set to go this year. Free accommodation sorted with a friend who lives there. Time off work approved.
Thankfully, I hadn't booked flights.
I never thought the tickets would be an issue.
Oh well, maybe next year.

Good to see this thread pop up again, I had forgotten about it.

Took a bit longer than expected, but I’m driving down to and going to Le Mans 23 with on-site camping

Part of group of 10 Porsche/20 people so should be a good experience, definitely only got tickets due to some of our group having good connections with campsite organisers.

And despite what I said in the initial post we are doing it as a 7 day road trip.

Looking like we're gonna be very Porsche heavy this year (last year the only one in our group was a 718 Spyder along with my Alfa, a Morgan Aero 8, and a Ferrari F12) - I'm likely to be paxing in a 997gt3, with 2 other Porsche, and a 360CS Rep, and a new Morgan Super3

Where will you be staying?

Last year we stayed with Village on the Curves which was a secure compound with its own large food and drink marquee, and outdoor seating area right at the entrance to the Porsche curves, most excellent watching Blower Bentleys & Bugatti Type 25s getting all crossed up, Shelby Daytonas thunder by, or the Mazda 787b scream past, whilst drinking draught beer

No surprise, we're using these facilities again

Debating whether to go with their 3 day food deal or just buy as needed when we are there, what did you do ?

Final Le Mans payment required next week then apart from spending on the trip it’s paid for.

We didn't do the food deal as you don't spend all day there, you're at the track.

We had breakfast there, would watch some classic racing with coffee, and sometimes with beer in the evening.

The 24 is a bit different to the Classic tho.

The security is excellent so no worries about the cars or tents or contents

Duggie you should get general entrance tickets no problem. The Grandstands are sold out but you don't need. Campsites a lot smaller. The campsites behind pits/village mainly gone as the new factory teams from Ferrari, Cadillac, Penske-Porsche etc needing all the space for their corporate F1 style paddocks . So as usual the plebs squeezed out .
if you have accommodation already you should be fine. try 1st tickets for general entrance though you can usually pay on the gate but that me be risky being centenary year .
