What I can't work out if is if you need one if you aren't planning on driving in the middle of these towns. And does the motorway through lyon count, as that would be an easy target for fines. Utter madness, as we visited Lyon a couple of years ago in the 80s 420SL and it now looks like that car would be banned completely.

Surely this cant be true??
A quarter of speeding offences in France are committed by foreign motorists. During the summer holiday months, that increases to half.

I presume that's only because we don't know where the cameras are. I know I've been snapped at least a couple of times by the cameras they've got built into the crash barriers.

My first time in France was with Andy G and coming off the boat he lead a group of around 5 of us. I thought initially the pace was a little extreme, especially given the UCR box in the 340R but soon relaxed and assumed it was the norm. Then we hit the first speed camera, I lifted, the only one which did so as I witnessed the camera go off like a strobe. Think someone got a night in the cell's that trip.
