Polished concrete

Post by jimbo » Wed Feb 01, 2017 11:42 pm

Is there anywhere near Aberdeen that polishes concrete? Keep toying with the idea of getting my garage floor done for ages. Is it crazy expensive?

Cheers

You can do it yourself with a diamond cup on an angle grinder, but it takes ages and makes an unbelievable amount of dust.

could look into doing it as a homer with the old man but it would need to be a sensible distance from Peterhead. Where is it you are based?

There is no additional materials required for a polished concrete floor, just the hire of the machines and a lot of labour.

I'd love to get my new garage floor polished too (when I move in). How can you seal them to protect it from fluid spillage etc?

What sort of cost would it be for a double garage floor?

Thanks,
Craig

I power floated my garage floor when I poured it. What a difference over just tamped concrete I would recommend it to anyone.

Apologies for the thread hijack but does anyone have any experience of putting a profile on to the edge of a concrete floor? My garage has a but of a drop down on to the tarmac that I'd like to try to take the edge off with some sort of chamfer.

The best painted finish would be with an epoxy 2 coat system. You have to put a sealing coat down first then the 2 coat system. The concrete needs to be in good condition. If the concrete is not perfect you could put a thin screed down first.

I've painted my garage floor twice and got good results in that it didn't lift, but it also marked very easily. I was planning to put epoxy down, but the drying time etc mean't I'd have to clear the garage for a few days and store the contents outside or do it in halves which would double the time. The product cost for 40m2 was going to be £250. So I changed plan and put down the heavy duty garage floor mat available in Costco in 2.1 x 5 m rolls. It took an evening to fit, I glued it down with tiger seal. Its been down a year now and still looks like new. Costs around £120 / roll.

I have a grinder attachment which minces through concrete. Free hand would be difficult so would need a little jig to hold and align. Grinding concrete is unbelievably dusty though and the finish would not be as good as a cut.

Alternatively could you add a small ramp, you get rubber profiles which can be fixed in place.
