I can't afford one Andy, if I drove one I might fall for it but its then an itch I can't scratch and from what I've read they are not exactly easy to get hold of anyway, even if funds are available
The older (old) versions like the one KennyT has just posted about aren't really usable/ affordable as a daily and those in between all look the same to me. I genuinely have very little interest in owning one. I see or hear the odd newer one and think that looks/ sounds good - but not enough to make me go and buy one.
I think it's a good thing that we don't all want the same things in life.

how much was that new? it's not even a year old (they were £72K before options like paint!)

so, less than 12 months, 8K miles for both, Evora's dumped a minimum of £12K vs. £5.8K for the 911.

And this is a special edition Evora vs. a run of the mill, base 911.

As you mention options in the Evora, I'm pretty sure the sunroof, wheel's, paint, gearbox, sports exhaust etc... Aren't free on the 911. There's got to be the thick end of £6k in that if not more.

It's also not a special edition Evora, it's a standard 400? Iirc the options in these is pretty much leather or suede and paint (and yellow was free I think). So not likely to be much there.

Again, not that I'm an Evora 400 fan.

Do like the older ones though, and those I've been in and driven have always seemed to ride very well to me.

As someone said earlier it's about opinions. Mine is I have no interest in Porsches and they might cost me next to nothing to own but in all honesty I would rather stick the money in the bank and get 0,5% interest if that's the aim. And if they're fantastic to drive, fine I have a car that does that and it's got a Lotus badge.

to be honest, i drove a ferrari 360 - engine is mid - but it also surprised me that it was "at shoulder height".
engineering a road car is about compromise - and the marvels of uniqueness is driven from that.

i meant my comment about "right place" as a joke...

anyways, id own mclaren, gt3, evora, elise, s1 exige etc etc etc - all desirable

Was also going to add its great to see Lotus building a car that gets this sort of discussion happening.

It's getting mentioned along side so truely great cars now and the 400 just won the Road and Track Silver award in the US. It's half the price of the overall winner.

I don't have any brand loyalty at all. It's always specific models that grab me, and - of course - you're always weighing up their compromises against your specific needs at that time. Possibly because I'm more of a fan of driving than cars. If that makes sense?

We ran a 944S2 for a few years. It was lovely.

If we only bought cars off spec sheets, no-one with any knowledge of vehicle dynamics would ever choose a design with the engine slung out the back. Porsche have worked wonders over the years to reduce the inherent handling issues this layout brings. They are great cars and I still have a 911 itch to scratch at some point. Its well documented that the Cayman has been "hobbled" over the years to maintain the 911's pricing position. And it's true that the layout brings challenges that a skilled and knowledgeable driver can exploit - when a clumsy wheelman can't. Put a capable driver into a 911 of any vintage and the gap over a novice is probably more marked than any other car. This adds hugely to their appeal of course - but you don't have to watch many Porsche Cup races to see how most leave the track - with an oversteer slide that has gone beyond catchable.

Similarly you wouldn't choose to have your engine high in the chassis. In any car. But have Lotus allowed this to dominate the handling? Or have their worked their chassis wands to bring a superbly agile car despite this? The launch Evora won Evo car-of-the-year against heavy competition. The 400 just came 2nd in Road & track 2016 car of the year. The car is reckowned in the industry for it's benchmark steering feel (for a PAS system) and spookily good handing/ride balance.

As an owner you can't respond on threads like this without coming across as a bit of a fanboi, but I considered both 911 and ExigeV6 when I was looking. 911 would have had to be several years older for the same price. Didn't want that. One of my driving buddies owns a V6 Exige. I've spent time in the passenger seat - mostly pressing the imaginary passengers brake pedal. They are epic. But ultimately too small for my needs (regular use - needs to be able to carry suitcases etc). Didn't want that either.

At the moment the Evora suits my needs perfectly. Might not suit someone elses (and wouldn't have worked for me even 2-3 years ago).

i cant drive just now coz tendons too sore from reaction to antibiotics (achilles liable to snap).
I miss driving so much! just now, because of finance and stuff its my focus - but even that has its moments, which i miss! lol

Totally with you on that - I'm just back driving last week after an 8 week break, having sustained a multiple fracture on my left kneecap (not recommended btw)

Still doing some clutchless changes as bringing the pedal up fully smarts a bit

I couldn't drive for 4weeks a few years back. Had my VXR8 at the time and would start it up in the drive to get a v8 fix.

Had to take it "round the block" after 3 weeks. Couldn't stand it any longer.

Going back to the OP, the 410 and a pre loved 997.1 GT3 are the same price so comparing apples of differing ages.

Run both for two years and one has left a big hole in your capital portfolio.
