Remote control off road buggy
Remote control off road buggy
I'm looking for a remote control off road buggy for Archie (6). I think I want a rechargeable one that is reasonably fast and able to take a crash or two. Anyone got any advice re what may be best to get?

After lots of research I couldn't see past the Maverick RTR stuff. It's the cheap brand of Hobao so has a good parts availability, design is pretty utilitarian but you are giving it to a child
. As always you need some self control to not buy overly specified shiny stuff. Young kids don't need brushless motors basically. Having done this as a kid myself I want to get my son something too. He started about 5 years old. It was very good for his coordination.
We've had to replace a few bits here and there. Bumper £3, drive shaft £3 (that one was me) and a motor £8 when G tried to force it to do burnouts Bought a second set of batteries and a proper charger which makes a difference. Never really trusted overnight chargers.
We got the truggy model. Works well and can handle grass. The monster truck type is a bit better in long grass but doesn't handle as gracefully.
Ours now has a Ken Block shell on it.

Don't be tempted by anything smaller than 1/10th. They just don't do grass which limits fun massively when your a small child and only allowed to use it in the garden.

It's a shame they are RTR, the building is half the fun
I have an old Tamiya Mad Bull 2WD which is quite decent on grass but probably costs a bit more once you get running gear, and Tamiya parts might be expensive too. Mine is a vintage one I picked up at a car boot sale for £15 including electrics, but no batteries / running gear though so I can't complain! Doesn't see much use mind - at this point I should add that I bought it before having a kid, and my little girl is only 2.5 at the moment

Quite right - building R/C cars has kept me quiet over many a winters day.
I've got a 7 or 8 cars which I'm going to sell, from entry level Tamiya up to a TRF 418 race chassis, all properly built and nearly all with brushless motors. If anyone is interested, let me know. They've never been run, just built and sat in a display cabinet
