So I... Drove a V6

Post by rawsco » Tue Jul 26, 2016 8:46 pm

Ian kindly let me take the blue v6 with 5.5k miles on it for a drive this evening... Ive been thinking about a v6 and decided to go have a go in the hope id decide either... I need one of these or nope I'll stick with the S2. So I'm still on the fence and no further forward.

I didn't think it felt any faster than the s2 240
It was definitely better screwed together than the s2
Rode better
Didn't stop as well
Dynamically it felt like the s2 but more settled although less pointy.
Brake and throttle were further apart than mine so heel and toe was more difficult
Gear change slightly better
Very quiet even in sport mode
Residuals are uncertain.
I guess consumables on track are more pricey but Craig reckons not too much more.
Both great looking cars in their own way.
Hitting the limiter in 2nd was a surprise wasnt even getting ready to change gear ;-)

i think if the residuals were solid on the 40-45k v6s I'd maybe move but right now I wasn't blown away by the v6 enough to say bugger it! Maybe some PAX laps on Tuesday will help. Any v6s going Tuesday night?

I thought immediately from driving it the difference in the damping, ride and power were significant.

It's a weapon on track till it runs out of fuel

Well done for at least comparing. Money burning a hole in your pocket? Just keep saving it away!

Cheers Doug, I'll give you a shout.

Not exactly Campbell, that day I met you in Murrays was when it all started I was originally looking at a V6, an LF1 but I couldn't really justify a brand new 60k motor to myself no matter how much man maths was applied. Now they are around 40-45k it's a realistic proposition. However sitting on an essentially non depreciating car that I love means that changing might not be the best idea even with that v6 magicalness.

The blue V6 with 5.5k miles is my old car, I replaced it with an Elise Cup - it's a great car for someone as it was well cared for.

There are elements of the V6 I miss but I don't regret changing for the Cup.

That's one thing with the V6 (and I speak from Evora, not Exige experience on this) I'm forever battering the limiter as I'm used to Lotuses revving. Even my lowly old K revved to 7200.

Not sure if it feels significantly different in the Exige to the Evora, but it strikes me as not really suiting the chassis - and that's a totally personal opinion based on set-in-my ways experience with the Elise chassis, rather than a criticism, before the leagues of happy V6 owners lynch me :)

It's one of the reasons donkey gets on so well with the Evora I think.

I've driven 90ies turbo diesels that rev higher than a vx220.

Which one? Standard rev limit is 6,400 rpm, but a simple remap will allow it to rev to 7,000rpm, which Donkeys did IIRC

I'd rather have more torque, slightly wider gearing and a ~7krpm as opposed to an 8k rpm and short-arse 2 /3rd for a road car (suits my driving style more).

I've driven the Cup and the S both on track and was very impressed. Felt much more capable and through turn 1 at Le Mans Neil Currs car would turn in at 135mph, which was way quicker than pretty much anything else could manage, my SC Atom included. (it would do 120-125 but usually needing correction, which was a clencher)

Cup in the Wet at Croft was superb. Again had just finished spending an hour trying not to become and accident in the rain in the Atom, and straight form the get go the Cup was epic - superbly capable, and I could have spent way longer playing in it than the 20 minutes Lotus allowed.

Issue for me with the V6 is its not that different internally to the S2, and it not as daft as an Atom. Had my name down for one till Lotus couldn't confirm the arrival date and kept cocking about

The 2-11 would take turn 1 at Le Mans flat relatively comfortably but it wasn't doing 135mph (lack of grunt compared to V6).
Clencher was only when the brake pedal then went to the floor for the following chicane...
(side note, that chicane can be taken at 100+ if you apex the gravel traps and a lesson to check upgraded brake fluid used)

I do love the V6, Neil's at Le Mans etc, Steve's and Benny's roadster at Hethel was a blast, very progressive. Would also be my choice if I had to replace Evora S and 2-11 with one car.

Woody drove mine, which was remapped. It was awesome. It was quite a linear delivery which meant it didn't telegraph that the red line was coming.

Evora revs to 7,000 in sport mode so not a million miles from your K shug, it just feels lazier than that IMHO
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?
