Just a quick update to this thread. My KODI/XMBC shortcut on the FireTV failed following an automated application update.

Resolved installing FIRESTARTER this morning via the adbFire tool.

Basically this UI loads when FIRETV boots. Means you dot get stuck with the normal PRIME UI on boot but can still access it as an application option like netflix or Iplayer .... or Kodi for you network files. Did I mention Kodi has codecs for everything so far , there aint a video format I have been unable to play, dont have to convert anything to a compatible format.

Honestly have not found a better solution to date.

Cheers
Scott

Looks good. I've just moved from Chrome Cast to Fire Stick recently as we are trialling Prime and so far I prefer having a remote to using my mobile for the Chrome Cast.

Plex works really well, though it doesn't seem to stop the Fire Stick sleeping and there are a couple of annoying changes in the latest version that I hope they sort out (mainly when playing music).

I'll need to look into Kodi / Firestarter..

I Bought a chrome cast to fill the gap while we wait for settlement to replace the Xbox. It's pretty cool but because of a stupid battle between Google and Amazon it's doesn't have PrimeVideo.

The ChromeCast coupled with Plex has been great though. But have to say prefer the general Xbox compatibility.

Brief update.
Bought a PS3 from istoo a while back, yesterday I bought a fire box for the upstairs TV, will have a play and look at downloads when I get time at weekend. Might end swapping it to the downstairs TV based on the rave reviews of it here.
Thanks for advice.

Lol. Update. Fire stick running well for many weeks now although monopolised by the kids for binge watching box sets of Kung Fu Panda and Penguins of Madagascar :-(

Like it, and now just need The Grand Tour to start!

Of more significance is the WiFi range extender I installed, enabling streaming speeds in a couple of rooms where existing router had poor reach. Genius.
