Re: Dubai hotel fire
We were in the Address Hotel Dubai Mall, the sister hotel a stones' throw away and was in Neos, a bar on the 63rd floor of the hotel that caught fire just a couple of nights before.
Given the complete chaos that was present in the downtown area thanks to the security and police, I'm amazed no one was seriously injured in this fire.
Thoughts of course to all those displaced, but getting out is the main thing.
Local news was saying the hotel was undamaged inside... yeah right!

Clare goes back to Dubai tomorrow, so she will be overlooking it from a few hundred meters away.

Aye, a very very good result. Three-odd hours to bring that under control with no fatalities or major structural damage is impressive. Real testament to the fire engineering. Be interesting to read the investigation findings.

Re: Dubai hotel fire
This type of thing worried me for a while with regards to Dubai.
When I was working there in 2007, we received a call from the Emirates Tower's maintenance manager asking if we could get along there asap as they were having problems with their Fire water pumps. When we got there we were told with the fire water pumps he had available they could only get fire water up as high as the 10th Floor ( not great on a 30 odd storey building). His pumps were F--ked and it took us a couple of weeks to get / make parts. During that time the office's worked away merrily unaware of what could happen. Our Arab partner allegedly reported it to the Dubai civil defence, but nothing happened.
Last time we were there I made sure our room was no higher than a couple of floors up, hopefully things have improved in the last 10 years but I wouldn't put money on that !!!
