PayPal / e-mail scam?

I received an e-mail a couple of days ago that looks like it is from PayPal saying : "you sent a payment of £44.99 to AVG eCommerce CY limited"
I didn't check straight away as I had carried out a couple of e-bay transactions that together totalled around that amount. Today I got another identical e-mail and checked PayPal and neither payments of £44.99 have come off my account and all genuine transactions are there and everything looks 'normal' . I assume it's some kind of scam but can't see what it is or what it achieves as there is no actual transaction just a couple of dodgy e-mails with no links or personal info in them?
