What to replace the Rangerover sport with?

Post by Mikie711 » Sat Feb 14, 2015 10:23 pm

Looking at changing my Rangerover for something more car based and the only real requirements are that it has to be an estate, be more economical than a RRS and be able to tow. Resist BMW's as the wife hates them with a passion (my fault, think old e30 325 and wet roundabouts ). Budget is healthy but not unlimited. Current favorite is another Audi, S4 Avant Black Edition quattro S-Tronic so you get the idea but what else is out their worth considering.

S4 is dull and uninspiring it's a good car that has been spoiled by the search for the removal of the compromises you need to make in order to deliver a truly great car. I'f I had a chunk of cash and was looking for a DD estate I'd consider a Jag XFr-s sport brake with a lovely supercharged V8. Something a bit different. Not sure
if I could live with the depreciation tho

And the mpg which also has to be a consideration given that this will be a daily hack for the misses.

I'm sort of going the other way, but more or less the same issues. I was using our old xtrail rather than the S4. So decided to look for a 4x4 that drives like a car. Tried the X5 RRS and Cayenne 2012 model. The cayenne had the air suspension system which is a very clever bit of kit on the porsche. It stood out head and shoulders for me, for such a big car it felt very nimble. So hopefully will get it next week. S4 looks like it's heading south to a very keen dealer. I never thought a dealer would come along with a reasonable offer, but there you go, fingers crossed.

Cayenne or the Smaller Macan
Really does drive like a car with adaptive air suspension
Ours has the magic electric towbar as well which fully retracts

Audio SQ5 if you are impatient
(Long waiting list on the Macan )

Not an estate car but i swapped our RRS out for a VW Amarok pickup truck. Love it.

Has everythin the RRs has but just not as plush. Great for chucking shopping in, firewood, anything in really and a better overall drive than the RRS.

Wouldnt have another Rangey now, even if you paid me.
If you need to go even faster, just imagine you are me.

Replaced my RRS with a Cayenne Diesel S. Much more like a car than RR and far better in every way (except perhaps if you are really off-roading). I don't tow with it, but I think it would be pretty good given weight and 625 ft-lbs torque. V8 Diesel S not quite as ridiculous a weapon as a petrol Turbo S Cayenne, but still quick and handles remarkably well. And will go 600 miles on a tank of diesel.........

From what I've read the cayenne is a good towing machine, and that was the v6 diesel. I didn't know about the electric towbar so didn't check on my very brief viewing, I'll check when I pick it up- it would be a nice surprise.

It's certainly not an off-roader in terms of protection etc, but with the high setting and some reasonable tyres you could tackle a field or rough track without issue. I'll be keeping mine a few years so will be worth investing in some winter tyres.

Yup, a set of winter wheels/tyres essential to avoid becoming a stereotype @rse in 4x4 with 21" wheels and 35 section tyres whenever it snows. It is pretty good in the snow with the right boots.

Yokos - W Drive on 21" and it pretty much goes anywhere
Just the small matter of £315 per corner

There is a problem with the A4/S4 in that there is a new model in the pipeline which would likely be launched around the time a new car would be delivered. Looked at a BMW 330 M Sport Touring, Ruth not impressed but didn't say no, no demonstrator in with the 330 engine so next time home will try one.
Think we want away from big 4x4's and into something more road car based.
