Anyone bought anything sice the road tax system changed?

Post by Chucks » Wed Feb 04, 2015 12:29 pm

Looking at something down south, just wandering how this works now that you have to buy individual tax?

Assuming I'll have to insure it, print off insurance & take to post office with MOT and V5 which could be an issue over a weekend. Or will I be able to tax online despite it already having current tax? Or could I just drive it home on the sellers tax with the assumption that DVLA won't have un-taxed it yet, bit dodgy should I get a pull though I guess.

I've not been anywhere near a post office for tax stuff for years.

So long as the car is insured by someone at the time you raise the tax then i can't see how it would be a problem - it's not like i wants to check that YOU are insured on it at the time of applying for tax.

As long as you have your own insurance you can drive it away as it is still taxed.

It is cancelled and a refund sent to the seller when it goes through the system which will take days plus. Just as any speeding tickets on the way home will be sent to the seller and not yourself.

When I bought the Ultima I used the automated DVLA car tax number and made a card payement by just pushing all the buttons on the mobile phone. Think I only needed the ref number on the v5 slip.

Thanks folks.

Tut, I'll have to try & smudge the date when signing the V5 over to take advantage of the speeding ticket loophole. I got a ticket on day one of ownership with the Caterham which did eventually get to me, would rather not repeat.

You can do it online at the time you buy the car (or even in advance if you want). All you need is the 12 digit reference from the new keepers section of the V5.

I just drove it home on the sellers tax when I bought the Porsche, after over an hour on the phone to the insurance company I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of messing around on the DVLA website too...!

I bought the car 3 days into the first month of the new system, and the seller had just taxed it, so much have been one of the first cash in on dual payment months that the DVLA had

'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
'18 Mazda Mx5 - The wife's, so naturally my daily
'19 Ducati Monster 797 - Baby bike bike
