Motorhome help - NLC

Post by ed » Tue Dec 30, 2014 11:32 am

Hi Guys,

My sister (and her partner) are planning on a 3-6 month trip round Europe and has asked for advice about motorhomes.

I have no clue about these things.

Anyone know much about these? She is going to view the below:

Any tips on what to look out for?!

Thanks in advance,

cheers Ed :thumbsup

Having had a 6 berth Eldis Autostratus with an underpowered engine, I would be looking at a 2.8JTD engine, and would almost certainly go for a Swift KonTiki 665. Excellent build quality, full sized cooker and fridge, and most importantly for just two people, a fixed double bed and separate shower.

Plenty out there with a £20K budget, but this would make a good starting point to compare with.

Same one but with more detail.

The Swifts are very well built, our latest one is a lowline, so no bed above the cab, with the newer 130 hp 2.3JTD (Iveco) engine. Getting 26 mpg, and happy to do 70 on the motorway. Our old one was the 2.8 with bed above the cab , had to sit at 60 to get 17 mpg, anything above that was sub 15 mpg.

I know someone with a Kontiki like that, and they have had it for years, really like it, and well built.
It is tricky to pick, but i think you need to know what the new cost was for them, then you get a better idea of the quality, the swift would be around £50k new.

Swift Kontiki now starts at £64.4K Stu. Trebled since I bought my equivalent Elddis in 1988.

We had fun doing Europe in the VW California, but doing it again I'd look for a big white box motorhome with a raised double bed at the rear over a proper sized garage underneath, and stick a scooter (or Panigale :) ) in there for getting about.

Best of luck to them... awesome experience!
