AV Receiver
AV Receiver
Might be replacing my present AV Receiver (Onkyo TX SR606) and 5 surround sound speakers (Kef including base box) with 2 Sonus 1's as the back speakers, a Sonos sound bar and base box. Have no idea what to replace the Onkyo with and would like some advice from those who know......Budget is around £500...

Just bought one last week - see thread about loft clear out.
I'm not in-the-know but after a lot of reading and research I went for this:
http://www.richersounds.com/product/av- ... rxv677-blk
4.5 or 5 star reviews from just about everywhere. Liked the airplay, built in wifi and spotify functions and HDMI 2.0 helps with a bit of future proofing. I had same budget as you too

Re: AV Receiver
If you're using all Sonos speakers do you even need an AV amp? Just use your TV for the switching

Re: AV Receiver
Martin probably easier to talk on phone, but here's a condensed version.
Sonos is good, but it's not real surround sound - it can only decode Dolby Digital with an optical from the TV (which is it's only input) and no you don't need a surround amp with them.
Playbar,Sub and 2 Play 1s come to £1600 (approx)
If you really want to get rid of your surround speakers, then go for it.
If you only want to improve your surround system and add Sonos network play functions then a new surround amp (Yamaha 677 is a decent choice) with it's own network player or add a Sonos Connect for another £279 would be a much cheaper (and in my opinion) better option.
Give me a call at Holburn Hifi on 01224 585713 tomorrow if you want a to go over the subject in a bit more detail and i'll see if i can do you a deal.
Tony.

Re: AV Receiver
Sorry for hijacking the thread, but a quick question for you Tony if I may...
Can you offer any advice on cooling media cabinets? I just shoved all my gear into a cupboard, and damn, it gets hot in there! Running everything with the doors open defeats the purpose of having it all hidden away neatly. I'd planned to put holes in the unseen side, screw on a couple of quiet 12v PC case fans, and then speed-control them with a temp sensor and a microprocessor. I wondered what the pro solution is, and whether it's quiet, neat and cheap enough that the DIY approach isn't worth the time and effort.
Thanks.

Re: AV Receiver
Graeme it's not something we get involved in (we're usually working with server rooms for big systems or open backed racks for smaller ones).graeme wrote:Sorry for hijacking the thread, but a quick question for you Tony if I may...

I was speaking to a customer the other day and he had the same problem as you.
His solution was to put make a hole in the wall the size of one of those USB laptop coolers, fitted it in to the wall and plugged it in to his Bluray player, so the fan came on when the system was switched on.
It kept his kitchen warm apparently
