Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
There are a couple of threads going about collecting/delivering cars to and from Murrays and i'm part of it.
Just to make sure i could collect Tut's car i thought i'd check with REIS.
Mary advised that an REIS issued sports car policy - SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDES driving someone else's car on third party only.
Your other insurance policy for another car will normally cover it, but again it's worth checking.

Does it cover me fully comp on any of yours?Andy G wrote: My policy gives me fully comp any car

Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
I'm with REIS and was made aware of this. On the positive side, they seem very accommodating in terms of adding drivers, and cars, on a short term basis for next to no cost. If I recall correctly it was £10 for a week to add a couple of drivers on my policy.
[edit] Also worth noting that the third party cover for vehicle not owned by you is not sufficient on its own right i.e. the car also needs to be regsitered as insured. Are REIS leading the field in removing this type of cover??

Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
Most of the Companies seem to have started doing it. My Doctor was caught out when driving N1 and only kept his licence by my extensive knowledge gained over the years of using bullsh*t.
I was covered on the Family car for 3rd party by RIAS(not REIS), but as stated REIS does not cover us to drive other cars. However I have now changed it over to Admiral after it expired. Admiral Family Policy is great, all the family cars are on it except N3, and everybody can drive everything including Luke who is only 21, Ian 24, and Clare and Jamie 26. I don't know how they work out the changes and added cars, but every time they give me money back, and did not even charge at all for the Honda CR-V that has just gone on.

That's good to hear. I have a car with admiral, normally get a warning that changes are subject to a silly admin fee of £25/30.
Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
Was aware that some companies were starting to withdraw the 3rd party on any car thing, but for now my insurers (AA and Morethan) still include. At last check
Before I accept the keys to anyone else's motor, though, I will re-check.
I may be moving to REIS next year for the Elise due to strong built-in track cover...what with Frolic looming etc. So will also beware of the 3rd party point (albeit it should still be place on one of the other car's policies, I expect).
I was pleased with Admiral Multi-car for a couple of years, but their premiums got silly and they couldn't match the 3 separate quotes I had from 2 separate insurers. What's new, eh.

Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
A lot of companies have removed third party 'driving other vehicles' over recent years I would imagine by stealth but covered in the small print & potentially catching people out as it was a fairly standard offering for decades.David wrote: Are REIS leading the field in removing this type of cover??
Having said that I have noticed a few seem to be creeping back in to offer it again, and it is worthwhile for the odd ocassion when you need to use it.
I would always look to a day insure policy if you are pre-planning driving someone elses car though particularly over a longish distance.

Agreed, will check with Mary if I plan on anybody else driving it back for me.
Not looking forward to the telephone call on Jan 8th with her.

Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
I think it makes sense to call your insurer before you take advantage of this 3rd party cover - that way the call will be on record and no come backs; also they will advise you of any special conditions relevant to your policy (e.g. you can only drive a car if it is also covered by another policy).
The most pragmatic solution is probably to get put on the owner's insurance for a few days - normally will come at nominal cost but saves any grief later.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
Classic car policies are similar.
My 944 is insured as a classic car, with a mileage restriction of 5k a year I think, 0 years no claims declared (and classic policies accrue no no-claims anyway) for £175.
No cover for 3rd party and adding my wife as a named driver almost doubles the premium.

Re: Driving other people's cars (Insurance stuff)
Mine allows anyone over 30s to drive my cars fully comp n of course allows me to drive any car fully comp up to 250,000 pounds, anywhere in Europe

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.
